Let me tell you about my experience at the Vientiane Night Market! It wasn't quite what I expected, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's definitely a sensory overload in the best way possible.
The first thing that hits you is the smell. It's a mix of grilling meats, sizzling noodles, and maybe a whiff of incense from a nearby stall. It's definitely an appetizing aroma! Then there are the sights. Rows and rows of red-roofed stalls stretch out along the riverfront, overflowing with everything from souvenirs like t-shirts and silk scarves to phone cases and knock-off designer bags. Be prepared to dodge a few people weaving through the crowd!
Now, the food stalls are the real stars of the show. There's something for everyone, from barbecued meats on skewers to sticky rice and fresh spring rolls. I snagged a skewer of marinated pork and some green papaya salad, and it was incredible! Super flavorful and fresh, and definitely cheap. Don't be afraid to point and try new things - that's half the fun!
Honestly, the market itself is a bit chaotic, but that's part of the charm. It's a great place to soak up the local atmosphere, grab a delicious and affordable bite to eat, and maybe even find a unique souvenir. Just be prepared for the crowds and don't be shy about...

I was only in town for 5 nights and there was no way I could eat my way through this thing. I managed to get through a few Pad Thai (obviously just across the river from Thailand), laab beef with rice, fried crocodile fillets, sai oua sausage, wok fried squid, grilled oysters and a multitude of other dishes that I didn't photograph. Of course all washed down with frosty BeerLaos.
My hotel was right around the corner at the eastern end of Rue Hengboun so I ate here a couple of times each evening just to sample as much as I could.
Also great second hand clothing and jewellery/bling stalls. Everything is reasonably priced. I was paying between 20k-60k kip for most meals.
Highly recommended to stroll through, people watch, eat and just take...
