The Art Gallery, Penang (Open by Appointments Only) — Attraction in George Town

Went during their Here & Now Art Exhibition, so no appointment was necessary (although prior arrangement to view certain pieces was made anyway). It's a pity that the gallery isn't closer to town, but I must say that the minor incovenience of getting there is well worth the effort. They have a huge collection of works from very talented artists, and it's no surprise that I ended up buying quite a few. Ee Lene wasn't just personable, but she has an amazing depth of knowledge of the artists, their works, and a pulse on the art community. Her passion is palpable. And the icing on the cake? I actually got to meet the artist of the piece that I purchased by sheer coincidence as he dropped by to pick up one of his other paintings! And yes, there's a very relaxed and laidback feel to the entire gallery that instantly puts you at ease viewing the art...

i visited the gallery whilst on a short holiday in Penang. i wanted to buy a painting showing local scenery or subject. The gallery was having an exhibition at that time so i didnt get to see the many other paintings which i saw were stored in at the back of the room. Ee Lene showed me some water colours by the local artist Lim Jee Yuan and i was totally delighted as they were what i have in mind. The paintings were of kampongs, shophouses etc. evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing of those days long gone when time didn't seem to fly by at such a fast pace. Ee Lene is very helpful and very efficiently had the painting packed ( very professionally ) and sent to my hotel in a matter of a few hours. Her gallery would surely be one of the places i would go to should i make another...

I visited the Art Gallery Penang after going through the gallery's online website. The Gallery is managed by a 2nd generation gallery owner, Ee Lene. Had a wonderful experience at the gallery viewing the pieces which I shortlisted from the gallery website, and ended up purchasing a beautiful piece from her. Ee Lene attended to me personally. She was patient and knowledgeable and afforded me ample time to ponder. She also shared the fascinating history of the gallery. Glad to find a gallery owner who is supportive and passionate on local arts. Would highly recommend a visit if you are interested in Malaysian art. Just note that prior appointment...
