Xlendi Tower, located on the southwestern coast of Gozo, Malta, is a historic coastal watchtower with breathtaking views over Xlendi Bay and the open sea. Built in 1650 during the rule of the Order of Saint John, it is the oldest free-standing coastal watchtower on Gozo. The tower served as a defensive outpost, protecting the island from pirate attacks and unauthorized landings. Today, Xlendi Tower is a well-preserved landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into Malta’s rich maritime history while serving as an excellent vantage point for sightseeing, photography, and hiking. --- History and Architecture Xlendi Tower was constructed under Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar’s rule as part of a broader network of coastal defenses. Unlike the larger Wignacourt Towers on Malta, Xlendi Tower is relatively small, built with thick limestone walls and a square layout to withstand attacks. Originally, it was armed with cannons and manned by a small garrison tasked with monitoring the coastline and deterring potential threats. The tower played an important role in Gozo’s defense system for centuries before becoming obsolete in the 19th century. Eventually, it fell into disrepair but was restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage trust, ensuring its preservation. --- Visiting Experience Location & Accessibility Xlendi Tower is perched on a rocky promontory at the edge of Xlendi Bay, offering sweeping sea views. It is easily accessible by car or a short hike from Xlendi village. The path leading to the tower is well-defined, making it a manageable walk for most visitors. Scenic Views The tower provides a panoramic outlook over Xlendi Bay and the surrounding cliffs, making it a fantastic spot for photography. Sunset views from here are particularly stunning. Restoration & Interior Access While the exterior is well-maintained, the tower is sometimes closed to the public. However, on select open days or by special arrangement, visitors can explore the interior and rooftop, where historic artifacts and informational plaques provide insight into its history. Hiking & Outdoor Activities The area around Xlendi Tower is ideal for hiking. Trails along the cliffs offer incredible views, and adventurous visitors can continue along the coast to places like Sanap Cliffs or the Kantra Valley. --- Pros & Cons Pros: ✔️ Stunning coastal views ✔️ Rich historical significance ✔️ Great for photography and hiking ✔️ Well-preserved structure Cons: ❌ Limited opening hours for interior access ❌ No on-site facilities (no restrooms or cafes) ❌ Can be windy and exposed to the elements --- Conclusion Xlendi Tower is a must-visit site for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers. While its interior access is limited, the surrounding scenery and historical ambiance make it a rewarding stop. Whether you visit for the history or the views, Xlendi Tower stands as a symbol of Gozo’s resilient past and offers one of the best vantage points on the island.

Xlendi Tower is the starting point of one of my favourite walks on Gozo along the cliffs. Super windy, its a great place to explore near Xlendi. A short walk from town including some steep steps gives you uninterrupted views of the cliffs on the other side of the bay. The tower is one of the 9 still standing Lascaris Towers built by The Order of St John, and dates back to 1650. It's currently being restored so you can't go inside FYI.

Love Xlendi - it has lots of seafront restaurants where you can enjoy a drink or some food watching the waves and fish swimming around. In the warmer months, you can go swimming in the sea from one of the various access points around the rocks (the beach is quite small). The walk to Xlendi tower is lovely - and the views of the cliffs and salt pans are impressive.

It is a gorgeous place. Here you can spend a very beautiful time alone or with you want climbing or simply walking along the amazing bay here. You can take fantastic photos, specially at sunset time. Then, you can enjoy a fantastic time in the afternoon, when the wind is blowing on the coast where you can have a very restoring nap laying on the flat rocks!

Great spot to watch the sunset. It took us around 30 mins to walk here from Willows Penthouse following the walking route Google Maps suggested (all down hill with some very picturesque streets!). There were quite a few restaurants near by and there was a bus back up the hill every hour, so it was easy on the legs to get to the apartment again.

I did a midday walk here from across the little bridge and absolutely loved the nature and easy walk ability. The tower is a wonderful work of art and I'm glad it's still in excellent condition. This is one of the single most wondrous views you can have of Gozo as you will see the greenery, water, and cliffs in one.
