In a nutshell: Scary experience - inexperienced doctors, little to no English spoken (contrary to advertisements), unnecessary treatments, extortion / double billing. I went in with scary vision changes and facial pain. The first person I encountered (and who turned out to be the manager and/or owner ?) spoke English and was reassuring; he advanced a quick diagnosis but said this now had to be confirmed by specialists. So far so good - made sense. After that, the treatment was done entirely by medical students, it seemed, even the "specialists" brought in - and there were several, all of whom required payment in the end. Of the 4 (!) I encountered over the 2 days I had dealings with this place, only 1 spoke acceptable English. I do understand Spanish, just cannot speak it well - but given that this is THE tourism zone in the region, if was still rather disconcerting not to be able to make oneself understood properly, and seems somewhat unprofessional, I have to say. This would not have been the real problem, however. Rather, I was held, essentially against my wishes, for hours on end, having to fill in one form after the next after the next - I was told I would be brought to my "private room" any minute now, and dinner would be brought, "any minute now", for hours. The Neurologist - THE specialist in Cancun, would arrive "any minute now" - again, the wait was hours. The neurologist did not speak any ENglish either, equally seemed to be a medical student. HIs diagnosis was scary and involved the suggestion that I stay for 3 full days in hospital (my entire trip was 5 days). I was given infusions/drips of substances that were not discussed with me; when I said I wanted to leave, I was told that a doctor would be there "any minute now" to discuss with me and sign the paperwork; again, hours passed; the same again when I finally waited for the administrator to prepare said paperwork. It was clear that the hospital was trying to maximise income by a) keeping me over night, b) involving as many doctors as possible. When I finally checked out, all 3 I had seen that night required separate payment (I had to go back a couple of days later to obtain a "fit to fly form" - and another student-doctor had to be paid. Most outrageously, i had been asked for my insurance details and spent lots of time on the phone ringing them and getting all the details, codes, etc; when I checked out, I was suddenly told this did not work and I had to pay privately (5,000 CAD), for medical services rendered and for the "room". When I got home, I noticed that the hospital had charged my insurance an additional 3,900 CAD. While I know that different countries have different standards of transparency and corruption, this is just ridiculous and future patients from North America should be aware - and weary. Hence my review. The most upsetting aspect was that several employees - doctors and nurses - were clearly trying to scare and frustrate me, with the constant "dangling" of services and things to occur "any minute now", but more disconcertingly in scaring me about my symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. They literally gave me an infusion of a substance that did not occur in ANY of my bills and medical report and that nobody was aware of when I asked them about it later. The diagnosis given was also refuted by the Canadian specialists I saw back home. In sum: cannot recommend, in fact, beware of using this hospital - they just want your money and some "fun" with a...
Read moreHospital Joya Cancun Review Finding ourselves in a medical emergency, we rushed to a new facility in Cancun; Hospital Joya. Security, Miguel immediately brought out a wheelchair, helped my husband into it and ushered us in, where we were greeted by Dr. Leonardo Sourez M.D. & Medical Co-ordinator, who immediately upon assessing the situation, put us into a room to await a second doctor. Dr. Raul Monoz attended to us within minutes and promptly started administrating an IV. He was thorough and confident and reassuring in the hospitals ability to help us heal from was turned out to be a tropical disease with 2 different bacterial infections and a virus that my husband was fighting. They admitted us to our own private room immediately which included state of the art equipment, a comfortable couch for my stay with my husband, a tv,, a bathroom and a beautiful view. After a very sick night for my husband, the following morning Dr. Sourez and the hospital administrator Maryjose knocked on our door to see how my husband was progressing. We provided our insurance, (which all visitors should have because you never know), and she, together with our own company administrator handled all the paperwork so I could focus on my husbands recovery. Over the course of our 4 day stay they brought food and coffee in for me as my husband was confined to a liquid diet. We left the hospital with my husband being able to walk again, the fever was gone, the rash was on its way out and my husbands condition improved incredibly. 2 weeks following our visit we did a scheduled visit back to go over the tests they continued to run for 2 weeks. Security recognized us immediately and unblocked a closed off parking spot so we could park. They all greeted us like long lost friends. My husband’s results were clear. Happy ending to a story we weren’t sure of how we were going to come out of on the other side. I fear not an illness here They were wonderful, and will be our choice again, in the event of any future injuries or illness. You just never know these days when you’re going to be hit with some kind of virus. Hats off and thanks to the whole team at Hospital Joya. Their team was efficient, reassuring and comforting in a time of need. It’s like nothing ever happened. Thanks to all who...
Read moreMy husband and I came to this hospital after leaving one of the worst hospitals hospital Azura in Cancun. Before I decided to move my husband from the other hospital, I had called hospital Joya and asked a certain amount for an endoscopy for my husband. Ricardo was the person whom I spoke with, and from that point on he was extremely extremely extremely helpful. Thank you, Ricardo! When we arrived, the facility is very clean and welcoming. Ricardo could see that I was clearly in distress. I told him he was the first person that had shown my husband and I any compassion and just that alone went a long ways with us. They are very upfront about the pricing and the costs, which is understandable. I was very frustrated and emotional, and not the nicest to the staff at some point. But Ricardo always remained very nice calm and understanding he even held my hand and hugged me and told me it was OK to cry. I want to express how very very very grateful I am for that. now onto the care of my husband, I feel like the staff here is very caring, knowledgeable, even with the language barrier my husband and I have felt so comfortable here as we are not used to being treated outside of the US. We had to wait quite a while, though for a specialist to come take care of my husband‘s endoscopy. By this time, Ricardo had left home for the evening, but there was another young lady at the admissions desk that actually helped out wonders. She helped me figure out that I actually did have travelers insurance and got the process started for us to have the travel insurance take over payment. At this point we had already paid US$12,000 to the previous hospital and another US$6000 to Joya. So you can only imagine how emotionally, financially, physically drained both my husband and I were so I want to thank her for that! After the insurance took over, we did find out that my husband needed to stay for another endoscopy to get some vertices taken care of. Overall, I would definitely recommend if you ever need any type of medical treatments. Please come to this hospital! They are a little pricey, but it is worth the level of care. The hospital at itself is beautiful and very clean something that Azura was not. I’ll say it again and again and again thank you so much to Riccardo. You are an angel...
