The market is a fantastic destination for authentic Mexican craftsmanship. This vibrant market, located in the historic center, is a treasure trove of handmade goods, including colorful textiles, ceramics, intricately crafted jewelry, and leather items. Established just before the 1968 Summer Olympics, La Ciudadela was created to showcase Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and is home to over 350 vendors, each offering unique and high quality products. The market is well organized and easy to navigate, with friendly artisans eager to share the stories behind their creations, which enriches the shopping experience. The market itself is named after the historic Ciudadela building, originally constructed as a tobacco factory in the late 18th century. It later served as a citadel during the Mexican War of Independence and became a national monument in 1931. Today, this historic backdrop adds a unique charm to the vibrant market atmosphere.

Been to a few different markets in CDMX and this one is our favorite for a few reasons....1. Not very hectic. 2. Vendors are not very pushy at all. 3. Some list their prices on the products. The prices are mostly fair here. Nothing dirt cheap but definitely a fair price for souvenirs. I do notice that most of the vendors will sell the low cost stuff ($5 - $100 pesos) pretty much the same price and many will have the prices listed for those products. The higher price products $300+ pesos will not have prices listed and can really vary in what they sell for. All will have stories on how theirs is the most authentic, best quality, etc... If looking to bring back a nice piece....it is worth asking around for the best price and negotiating. Overall, I find the vendors to be very friendly and honest. I hate shopping, but this experience isn't bad. Better than shop-hopping in Centro.

A place full of various items...some very nice and some mediocre. A wonderful place to find gifts to take back home. Many booths have repetitious things, but each offer them at their own price so look around for a great deal and you will find it. Inside, in seccion 8, is a small coffee shop/store call Ocelotl. The woman will grind fresh coffee beans...by hand...for you to take home or you can have them prepare your coffee to drink right there...the aroma is Heavenly! The only reason I gave La Ciudadela 4 stars instead of 5...a couple years ago i was a pick pocket victim...a man stole my cell phone, passport and that little white, immigration form you need to get back to USA...all in one swipe (all items were together)...it was very disheartening because I had shopped here a few times before without any problems.

I went on a Wednesday and it wasn't very busy. Mixture of mass-produced tacky souvenirs and genuine products made in Mexico. Some stall holders were making their products while attending their stalls. Some products contain details of where the products are made. I was expecting the stall holders to be very pushy, so I had my shields up before i went in. Almost all of the stall holders were friendly, many would greet you, some ignore you and some would invite you to look and leave you alone unless you approach them. I tended to only go into stalls that had prices visible (which was many of them). Prices are very similar, if not identical, to each other which saves you trying to compare stall to stall. Many stalls ask for no photos. Some very interesting products, something for everyone.
