Playa Zipolite — Attraction in Oaxaca

This is my third time visiting Zipolite, each time for month long trips, so I've pretty much done the rounds of the town. I thought I would offer a few reccomendations that are bit off the beaten track.

Piña Palmera --coffee, handmade soap, coconut oil, handicrafts, etc. to support local disabled people This is a charitable organization on corner of HWY 175 and Pelicano -- 3 minute walk from the center of town -- that sells a variety of good quality products to support local indingineous people with handicaps.

Favourite Beachside Seafood Restaurant For fabulous fish tacos, prawns, and fresh fish my favourite restaurant, hands down, if Boca del Mar. For some reason, it is rather quiet in comparison to Sel y Pimenta, which it is next door to, but don't let that put you off. The food is excellent.

Strong Drinks I'm a big fan of Nice Place on the Beach, which offers two strong cocktails for 60 pesons. It's a bit rundown compared to some of the other beach side bars but that's part of its charm. The staff are super lovely.

Awesome Burgers There is a little burger stand that sets up shop on the main road outside Nice Place on the Beach called Sativa. It's run by an adorable local Mexican family (mom, dad, and kids) and the burgers, which are loaded with condiments and special sauce, are just so good, as are the homemade French fries which you can drizzle in cheese sauce.

Fun Night Out There is an adorable little gay disco / tiki-style bar with super friendly staff and customers called ChiZme on Avenue Pelicano. If gay disco isn't your vibe, there is a sports bar at the end of Avenue Boca Roca which is also quite convivial.

Firefly Cinema Love this place. They show great movies by donation several times a week. The experience is much improved from three years ago with a big screen, good quality speakers and projector, and covered seating area. They also have a bar which serves drinks and light meals. You can find out the program through Facebook.

Tacos For delicious and cheap tacos, (60 pesos for 5) I recommend a family style restaurant on the main street called Nicole. It's kinda non-descript but has bright table cloths and is usually quite busy in the evening. There is also a lady taco vendor who makes the rounds through town around lunchtime. Her tacos are ten pesos a piece and are very nice.

Delicious Deserts Located close to the corner of Calle Shambala and Hwy 175, there is an amazing little cake shop called Postres del Sol. The mango cheese cake is superb.

Cakes and Flans on the Beach There are a couple of ladies who sell cakes and flans in the evening on the beach, which are quite nice.

Mezcal If you're looking to buy a bottle, I recommend the restaurant beside Postre del Sol on Hwy 175. They have half a dozen or so local bezcals you can try priced between 400 to 500 pesos per large bottle. The food at the restaurant is also decent. Rotisserie Chicken There is a rotisserie chicken place that operates on Avenue Pelicano. A whole chicken plus fixins is $140. They usually sell out by early afternoon.

Water safety / DROWNING It is not safe to swim on the far right side of the beach by Alquimista. The current is strong and will take you out to the ocean, where the waves will overwhelm you, or else you might end up getting bashed upon the rocks. I saw three people almost drown in that area in the span of one week. They were rescued by the life guards who had to risk their lives, after constantly warning people not to swim in that area. You can swim that part of the beach, just not on the far...

Playa Zipolite is a beach community located in San Pedro Pochutla municipality on the southern coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido.

Zipolite is best known as being Mexico’s first and only legal public nude beach1] and for retaining much of the hippie culture that made it notable in the 1970s. The origin of the name Zipolite has been lost over time. Translated from Zapotec, Zipolite means "beach of the dead". Some versions have that referring to dangerous underwater currents just offshore.[24] Locals say the Zapotecs offered the bodies of their dead to the sea and it is the consequence for why the beach was unoccupied until alternative foreigners started arriving here in 1969.[5] Other versions has it coming from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, meaning "bumpy place" or "place of continuous bumps or hills".[6] The beach is currently popular with foreign tourists, especially backpackers, who stay in one of the many rustic cabins or camping spaces that line the beach.[7

HistoryEdit

Archeological finds at the east end of the beach shows that the area has a long history, but for the first half of the 20th century only one family lived here.2] In the 1960s and 1970s, counterculture hippies began to congregate here in part due to the beach’s isolated nature. At the time, there was little law enforcement, and drug use became common.[3] In the 1970s and 1980s the beach gained a reputation in Mexico and among foreign travelers as a free-love paradise.[6]

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Zipolite was hard hit by two hurricanes and a fire. The first hurricane was Hurricane Pauline on 7 October 1997, a category four storm which destroyed nearly everything in town with strong flooding, leaving it -along with Mazunte and Puerto Ángel- cut off from the mainland,[9] but there were no deaths.[2 Next was Hurricane Rick on 9 November 1997. While not as strong as Pauline, the storm damaged roads and other infrastructure that was only partially rebuilt after Pauline.[10] The last disaster to cause major damage was a fire that broke out on 21 February 2001, burning many of the wood and palm-thatched structures that were on the beach.[11]

Since its beginnings in the 1960s, Zipolite has evolved from handful of beachfront cabanas and palm-thatched palapas to concrete, but still basic, hotels and other structures with a few more amenities.
