AMAZE is an immersive light installation exposition with a loose storyline close to Amsterdam Sloterdijk. The whole exposition is ambitioned and fancy in it's appearance and the light installations are appealing. The staff came off as friendly and motivated to make the experience worthwhile. The exhibition is guided to several rooms with a programmed and looping show of a couple of minutes until you are ordered on forward to the next installation. Only the two or three last rooms are actually meant to stay for a while. One room offers a 20minutes light installation that visitors can enjoy sitting in a beanybag. All other rooms have a very strict time limit in order to run the groups through the exhibition fast, so other groups can follow and waiting times are not too long. All togehter we waited about 15 minutes sitting in the lobby, while a countdown was informing us about how much waiting time left. I would lie, not admitting that the tiny muffin offered at the entrance was in fact delicious and (pun intended) sweetened our stay.
Even though I can recommend the exhibition there are still some notes to concider, some already refered to in other reviews.
The price is quite expensive. Even though I can appreciate the effort put in this exhibition, paying more than 50€ for two people is not something that comes lightly. I think about 20€ per person simply would have created a better feeling of price-performance ratio. I also have to admit that I visited similar exhibitions offering way less for the same price and that the fact that it is an artsy exhibition located in Amsterdam definitley plays a role.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the loose storyline is kinda anti climactic. In the beginning a promising and exciting journey is established just to loose its spark after the first room. Even though there is an "AI-voice" guiding you and your group (with a prepicked "leader") further ahead that is trying to keep the story going, alas, the whole thing never really holds up to its promise. And what's up with those fancy looking headphones during the instruction part in the beginning? We were asked to put them on, kept them on for the instruction of the instructor, who stood about 2 meters away from us and was clearly audible without the headphones on - just to remove them again about 3 minutes later. Maybe an art thing? I am sorry, but I did not get the point of that part.
Even though the installations are quite pompous, I did not feel as AMAZEd as I was promised from the very start. Maybe because of the missing connections between the installations? Or because every installation just played its preprogrammed patterns from begin to end with short or no real interaction (the installations with a little more interactions were my favourite)? Or because the stay in every room was very time limited and it was hard to settle with the impressions before being ordered to the next room? Maybe the expectations were raised just too high and couldn't hold up to what they had promised in the end? I cannot put my finger on it, but something was missing for the full 5star review.
In summary, I can recommend AMAZE Amsterdam to all those who just want to check out some neat light installations, do not mind to pay that kind of entry fee and do not expect too much seeing a perfect worked out experience with proper storyline, even though overly advertised as such. Every single installation is definitely more or less worth to see and quite enjoyable on their own and after all I really can appreciate the work of everyone, who is involved in...
Read moreWay better than I expected! I enjoy electronic music though I'm not the type to go to clubs, and my husband really enjoys light art (I guess you would call it that? Laser light shows?). While I'm not epileptic I can sometimes get dizzy in dark loud rooms (like concerts) BUT FEAR NOT! There was a railing or wall in each of the entertainment rooms so I could keep my barings and not worry about getting dizzy.
There is a beautiful bar before you go in, and free lockers, so I highly recommend you arrive early and maximize your experience. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. I didn't expect all the immersive or interactive experiences, I think I expected to sit back and watch, but this was extremely fun, beautiful, entertaining, and thought provoking. One of our favorite memories of my husband & my trip to Amsterdam/Rotterdam.
Seriously, do not miss this! It's unlike anything else! I would love something like this in the US, I would immediately drag all my friends for a fun night out! If I ever find myself back in the Netherlands, I would absolutely do this again. It's also very easy to get to by the city GVB bus from Amsterdam Central, and the neighborhood is quiet and very safe. You should make a reservation tho, as they only allow groups of about 8 people at a time to ensure everyone gets the full experience 😁 (I said there's a "wait" to enter - because we choose to arrive 45 min early, in case of transit delays, but honestly you only "need" to arrive about 10 min before your...
Read moreI'll get it out of the way... yes, it is... AMAZE-ing. Sigh.
Honestly, though, this is truly an awe-inspiring experience. I'm a fan of light shows, both from a spectacle standpoint and a technical one. And this place didn't disappoint whatsoever.
None of it felt overdone or cheesy, the plot/story they create to give each room meaning works well, and the sheer effort that has gone into creating this doesn't go unnoticed.
They put you into groups of around 6ish people. Someone is comedically chosen as the leader, and this person will guide the group, with the assistance of orange lights and audio cues when to stop and continue.
The route is so well-timed, too. From the moment your colour token is called, to the moment you reach a certain part of the experience, each group is in perfect sync, meaning you don't miss anything, nor do you have groups interrupting your room.
It wasn't too awkward being part of a group, either. I'm normally not a fan of this sort of thing, but it worked well, and eventually you are broken up from the group to do your own thing.
Every member of staff/cast was excellent in their role, being friendly, welcoming, and ensuring everyone knows what is happening and what to do.
I truly reccomend visiting this place. It's worth the money and time, and if you're into abstract experiences, using all kinds of technology, and especially if you're into dance music to which this is inspired from, you're going...
