Name(s): Maungawhau / Mount Eden (often just “Mt Eden”) • Type: A dormant volcanic cone / maunga, also a suburb around it. • Height: ~ 196 meters above sea level. • Location: ~4-5 km south of Auckland’s Central Business District.

⸻

Significance • It is the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus, offering 360-degree views of the city, harbour, other volcanic cones, etc. • Strong Māori cultural importance: It was a fortified pā (a fortified settlement), has terraces, defensive ditches, food storage pits, and is sacred (wāhi tapu). It’s co-governed by Auckland Council and the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

⸻

What to Do / Places to See Summit & Crater Walk • Walk the paths to the summit (“tihi”) to see the crater and enjoy panoramic views. • There are boardwalks around the crater rim in parts, which help protect the archaeological features. Visitor Experience Centre & Café • The Te Ipu Kōrero o Maungawhau / Mount Eden Visitor Experience Centre helps explain the geological, Māori, and colonial history. • Friend & Whau Café is nearby for refreshments. Mt Eden Village (Suburb & “Village”) • The streets around Mt Eden Road / Mt Eden Village have many cafés, specialty shops, galleries, bookshops etc. Great for strolling, eating, browsing. • Also good walking around to see heritage homes and old-style architecture. Eden Garden • A tranquil garden set in a former quarry (2 hectares) with a wide range of plants (camellias, maples, etc.) and very scenic. Other Nearby Spots • Essex Reserve (small park & playground) near Mt Eden Village. • Dominion Road for more food / shopping options.

⸻

Getting There & Practical Info • Access by Public Transport: There are multiple bus routes that go to Mt Eden Road / Mt Eden Village. • By Car / Parking: • There is a lower car park off Puhi Huia Road for accessing the summit. • Note: vehicles are not permitted beyond certain bollards up near the summit; you’ll need to walk. • Opening Hours: • Mt Eden Road and Tahaki Drive entrances are open 7am-8:30pm in summer, and 7am-7pm in winter aligning with daylight saving times. • Walking / Difficulty: • The walk to the top takes about 5-10 minutes from the carpark / access road depending on fitness. • Paths and walkways are well-maintained; for those with limited mobility, there’s provision (access codes) to use the summit road in...
