Akaroa Lighthouse — Attraction in Banks Peninsula Community

A visit to Akaroa is obviously incomplete without visitung this lighthouse. Light first exhibited in 1880. The light is 270 ft above sea level and the tower is 28 ft in height. The white light flashes once every 10 seconds and can be seen for 23 miles in clear weather . The power source is from mains electricity with one diesel generator on standby for emergency power. A delightful historic lighthouse that was saved by the local community from destruction and relocated to this picturesque location. We were lucky enough to have come past during it's brief opening time, but are very grateful we were able to experience this. I visited Akaroa on a day trip from Christchurch. The Akaroa got a lighthouse which was pretty old. The present location is not the first location for lighthouse as it was placed earlier somewhere else but moved to present location some years back.
