🌸 Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple Christchurch – A Peaceful Hidden Gem
If you’re looking for a moment of peace, reflection, or cultural enrichment in Christchurch, the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple is a beautiful sanctuary worth visiting.
Tucked away in the Riccarton area, this temple is not just a place of worship but a cultural and spiritual centre open to everyone, regardless of background or belief. The architecture is clean, modern, and infused with traditional Buddhist aesthetics — from the serene courtyard to the golden Buddha statues that greet you upon entering.
The atmosphere is calm and welcoming. I felt a genuine sense of tranquility walking through the halls. Inside, there’s a lovely tea house and gift shop, where you can enjoy a warm drink or browse through handcrafted items and Buddhist literature. Their vegetarian meals (especially during special events) are affordable, nourishing, and prepared with great care.
The volunteers and staff are incredibly kind and happy to answer questions about Buddhism or the temple itself. They also run community classes, meditation sessions, and exhibitions promoting interfaith harmony and cultural understanding.
Whether you’re coming to meditate, learn, or simply take a break from the noise of daily life, Fo Guang Shan offers a quiet space for inner calm.

The art was amazing and intricate but mostly the staff made the whole visit. As soon as we arrived someone was there to greet us and direct us where to go, every room had some lovely person to explain the area. Everyone was just so lovely and warm and welcoming. We particularly loved the lady at the counter who very patiently helped me learn a few words in Chinese. She has renewed my interest in learning the language. Upstairs they had calligraphy, my kids who struggle to sit still, sat there for half an hour writing over the examples with such intense interest and concentration. We will be going back...
