Great kids playground and ground level water park. Next to seawall at Sumner beach.

It's at the far Eastern end of Sumner beach tucked under the lee of the cliffs. So is sheltered from prevailing easterlies, but still quite sunny. Plenty of new play ground equipment here that is suitable for most ages. And the water play area is off to the side near the toilets - provides an area for the kids to go splashing around during hot days. So you don't need to go into the sea for them to cool off.

There is a cafe nearby for coffee or ice creams or grab some fish and chips in Sumner village shops and eat them here.

There are plenty of seating options and there is some seating at picnic tables that are under cover for sunny and not so sunny days.

It's popular and likely you'll have to drag your kids away from the playground and water area at the end of day - but you can rest assured they will always want to come back for another visit.

So...

A great longboard wave . Beware of a strong rip by the breakwater as many learners get swept out. Also learn the surfing etiquette , about 10 rules that they have had posted in most popular Aussie beaches for 10 years so in another 10 years they will be posted here. The park is good for the gremlins and the Ocean cafe is the best place for a coffee and feed. The veiw is spectacular and there is a nice walk to the breakwater where you can check out the back of the rollers and see what rides the surfies are getting from a side on angle. A good trick is to paddle through the pipes at half tide but sometimes this has resulted in a broken board but worth it to get 2 years off the 40 years to be a local status. Do your self a favour and start surfing. I do personal coaching so get in...

This was a hidden gem to us, I didn't know it had been upgraded. The kids had a blast in the playground and the splash pad/water part is such a fun addition! It was a busy day but we still got a nice spot in the shade. And you can wander over to the beach for a paddle if you want (although it's a bit safer to head down further on the beach) The only thing holding it off 5 stars for me is parking. We had to park quite far off and walk. But would go for...

Nice little area with a cafe and ice cream parlor. Great place to bring the kids as there is a sheltered beach and paddling pool. Behind the cafe is a grassed area for picnics or reading a book. There is plenty of bike stands and also a solar powered charging station for mobile devices. When the tide is down you can walk along the long Sandy Beach and sometimes see the mountains all the way to the Kiakoura's.

love this area, it would have been more better to have more playgrounds for younger children from 1yrs-3yrs they just get bowled over by big kids running around and dont actually get to play. so i wish the council thought of that before putting in those ropes and rolling barrel in. #unfair
