THE $5 DONUT SQUARE.
Sorry guys, I'm really disappointed and only going to give two stars after this visit. I was really excited about finding an authentic German patisserie, and arrived was greeted by polite and friendly staff, in looking through the display cabinet I chose something I used to make and really really enjoy.
I chose what looked like a well made Gernam Bienenstich Kuchen (Bee Sting Cake) traditionally known to be a lovely yeast risen brioche, traditionally lovely and soft, generously filled with a Bienenstich pastry cream. At $5 I felt as though I was in for a real TREAT, having made this often and missed the dreamy custard and cream and almond topped brioche.
Now for the verdict. 😔
To be honest it felt as if I was eating a fresh cream donut with almond topping from the local Chinese bakery. The bread component, from being chilled, was heavy and doughy, not soft as traditionally found in brioche, and the filling had the taste and consistency of nothing more than whipped cream with icing sugar and vanilla added, like a kiwi grandma does on her scones. No yellow tinge from the addition of egg yolks and no semi firm custard like consistency as typically found in this dessert, the blending of the creme patisserie like pastry cream with whipped cream. On a good note. The almond honey topping was lovely.
The opportunity to have authentic German desserts again was the main reason I drove from West Auckland to Birkenhead, for that lovely German sweetness.
I to be honest felt so disappointed. I would not be happy in purchasing another one of these. Looked...

We ordered two boxes for a 93 year old’s lunch party thinking possibly some to eat later. Not at all - even non sweet eaters zoomed in and ate up large. For the birthday boy who chose - this was a great alternative to one larger cake. Cost was roughly the same and given the complexity of some of the pieces I thought very good value. Do try them for your next celebration or simply as a spoil for a special tea occasion....

Just recently ordered the cakes from here (2 different occasions) to try: Black Forrest was really delicious, fresh cream and cake was moist and then the Lemon Cheesecake was yum, so the creme cheese filling could of done with a little zest as the lemon was just on top... However I'm just a big fan of lemon. All in all happy we tried as they went down like a treat. Def always back for pastries for...
