ย ย ย Read moreNot anything flash in terms of a mall. It is more convenient than street shopping, and is pretty much the only option for the people of Lower Hutt after its immensity sucked the life out of High street and Queens Street. I go there sometimes, but not because the mall lures me. Awesome news is that a further 50 shop spaces have been deemed earthquake prone, coming up to less than 34% of the new building code for earthquake safety. These parts of the building will be reinforced (thank god) but closed while it happens, and also makes me less than happy about the overall structure of the mall. It went up piecemeal, and you can guarantee it was done on a budget budget. What's the rest of the building? 34% of code?
In its favour I'd say, it's clean and usually has enough parking.
Until visiting the Gold Coast I had no idea that a mall could be anything more than this. Other New Zealand malls are generally not much better or worse than this Westfield. But it is actually possible to have a mall that uplifts shoppers and makes them feel happy about being there, that had indoor-outdoor flow and a pleasant edifice instead of featureless concrete slabs of walls facing the streets like a maximum...
