I really loved the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. You’re able to move through the spaces at your own pace. I loved the inclusion on Maori arts and artists. Although (as tangata tiriti) the stories were not my own, I learnt a lot by trying to view the various works through different cultural lenses, and consider their significance to folk with whakapapa to the whenua being represented in a lot of the pieces. My only critique would be that loud music could be heard throughout much of the gallery, and my audio-sensitive friends struggled to focus on enjoying the art due to this.

A great place to spend a day getting lost and finding yourself again. Impressive building with well structured wings of different themes and time periods. Some rarer pieces are also featured. Interactive exhibitions are a nice touch — like the long rainbow hammock, so long you’ll have to roll across it repeatedly to get out. Visit the loose tea exhibit at the end for a refreshing reward with a view over the city — a welcome treat after the hours you’ll spend on your feet meandering around. A definite recommend in Dunedin City Centre.

Fantastic value for money (admission is free), with a collection that far exceeds the reach of many similarly sized cities’ public galleries. Exhibitions are rotated regularly in both the permanent collection — which boasts pieces by Monet, Turner, Constable, Tissot, as well as the NZers: Hotere, McCahon, and Goldie — and upstairs with the more… modern stuff.

Really enjoyed my time at the gallery, was bigger than I thought wow great place to showcase the art. Our favorite was walking through the spectacular hammocks and finding the beautiful tea room. Amazing ❤ In a stunningly bright, windowed room overlooking the Octagon we enjoyed making our own tea with the choices in our table. This is a Must Do. 👍👍👍👍👍

Amazing! I prefer the older paintings that show off real skill the more modern art sections I would say just look like someone left trash and paper in a room and got paid too much. Lovely staff amazing easy access building and it’s free. Totally recommend even if you think people waste money on twisted metal lol the section by robin white was awesome
