The Long Shadow The wind howls through the pines, a mournful sound, A symphony of loss, where peace is not found. The hills, once green, now bear a somber hue, A legacy of war, forever stained and true. From shores of emerald, where the kiwi did roam, Young men departed, far away from home. To fields of Flanders, and the sands of Crete, They marched with courage, a defiant beat. The mothers wept, their hearts with sorrow torn, As sons embraced, a promise faintly born, To fight for freedom, for honor and for right, And face the shadows of the coming night. The letters flowed, a lifeline thin and frail, Of distant battles, and a chilling tale. Of comrades fallen, and the price of war, A heavy burden, they could no longer ignore. The telegram arrived, a message stark and grim, Shattering silence, extinguishing all whim. A son, a brother, lost beyond recall, A vacant chair, a portrait on the wall. The silence deepened, a haunting, hollow sound, As grief consumed, and hope could not be found. The fields of poppies, a crimson, somber sight, A constant reminder of the fallen in the night. But from the ashes, a spirit did arise, A fierce resolve, reflected in their eyes. To rebuild, to heal, to cherish every day, And honor those who paid the ultimate way. The veterans returned, their spirits scarred and deep, Haunted by memories, secrets they would keep. The weight of war, a burden hard to bear, A silent struggle, a constant, gnawing care. Yet, from their sacrifice, a nation did endure, A testament to courage, forever pure. A legacy of strength, a bond unbreakable, A story etched in time, a tale unforgettable. The years have passed, the war a fading gleam, But echoes linger, a haunting, mournful theme. The wind still whispers, through the pines so tall, Of those who answered duty's fateful call. And in the quiet moments, when the day is done, We hear the echoes, of battles bravely won. The sacrifices made, the tears that freely fell, A debt of gratitude, a story we must tell.

Auckland War Memorial Museum – A Must-Visit Historical Gem Visiting the Auckland War Memorial Museum was truly an enriching and unforgettable experience. It offers a fascinating journey through New Zealand's history, including its cultural heritage, involvement in global conflicts, and connections with other nations. The museum is filled with powerful photographs, engaging videos, and thoughtfully curated exhibits that truly bring the past to life. The infrastructure is impressive—majestic high ceilings, open and spacious interiors, and a calming, respectful atmosphere throughout. It's a three-story building with plenty to explore, and visitors are provided with a map to help navigate each level with ease. There’s also a lot of parking available outside, and the views around the museum are simply beautiful. Inside, you’ll also find a library for those who want to dive even deeper into history, a cozy café area to relax and recharge, and some amazing jet models and Greek sculptures on display that add a wonderful visual element to the experience. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about New Zealand’s past, this museum is an ideal place to spend an entire day. With a minimal entry fee and so much to discover, I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Auckland who has an interest in history, culture, or architecture.

We came by for the sea monsters exhibit. The newly refurbished atrium was large and very nice. It had waiting areas as well as the ticketing area, a cafe and the souvenir store. We purchased a ticket to the special exhibition there. The ticket to the exhibit also included entry into the museum. The sea monster exhibit was ok. There were quite a few nice fossils and some interesting things to do but it was a lot shorter than I expected. With plenty of time to spare we decided to walk around the museum too. Some of the areas were a lot newer and it was quite interesting watching the new interactive displays. There were also some of the older ones like the volcano exhibit. There is also a place for children at weird and wonderful. I particularly enjoyed the Imaginarium since it was quite different. The natural world display was also nice with the dinosaur and moa bones. There were a few exhibits that were smaller but also interesting. We didn't walk through it all but did enjoy what we saw. They also have an underground paid carpark that goes right into the atrium of the museum. It was useful in the rain and if there are no free parking spots in the domain. Quite a nice place to wander about to see the history of New Zealand. Take a day or two to see whats in there.

This extraordinary museum has something for everyone to enjoy. Right now the wildlife photography exhibit is happening, and soon there will be an extension open for the World War I exhibit. The staff here are mostly friendly if keen on maintaining the rules (don't make my mistake and drink from your water bottle in the stairwell. Food and drinks are pretty much limited to the cafe area). There is a short (30 minute) but highly entertaining and informative Māori cultural performance narrated and performed by 2 Māoi wāhine and 4 more Maori warrior tane. Please also note that during the performance there are no video or other photography permitted. Afterwards, though, the performers are happy to take photos with you and answer questions. The Heart's Scar, Hall of Rememberance and and war plane exhibits are amazing and sombre. Please visit the New Zealand Wars exhibit! I was thrilled by the ever expanding Māori history exhibit as well (finally! I can see the inside of a marae!). This museum will be the one place I will continue to visit again and again. Seriously considering getting the membership pass. Tuesday nights are a great, quiet time to visit! And we haven't even touched on the Winter Garden...

I was hesitant about visiting the Auckland War Memorial Museum because I'm bothered by the loss of young life lost in wars. This museum contains not only a War Memorial but a history of the people who live in Auckland, the history past and present of the Maori people, natural history, Asian history, science, an exhibition on volcanoes including an experience relating to volcanoes. There is an audioguide. The museum consists of three floors. The third floor contains the War Memorial and exhibits from different wars. I spent over 3 hours in this museum. It really is a must-see. It is well laid out. You will find staff throughout who are eager to assist you. There is a section on the first floor of about 12 people of all ages and backgrounds who live in and around Auckland. I listened to all the stories, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the people. The young boy who spoke reminded me so much of my grandson. If you have time after the visit, I would also recommend visiting the winter garden, which is free entry. You can see the green houses from the front of the museum. It's about a 2 minute walk.
