Chocolate Boutique Café. — Restaurant in Waitematā

I visited Chocolate Boutique a few days ago. I had last been there a year ago, and I couldn’t help noticing how shabby it looked. It was a Sunday evening so it wasn’t busy at all, but you could tell the lack of care or concern about the tidiness around the place. Tables had crumbs on them, there was a spill on the floor beneath one of the tables, the chairs were not arranged neately around the tables. The interior is also rather dark as you go further into the cafe. I was expecting to be sat down so I asked for a table for two but was told to sit anywhere. It was a bit confusing at first as we didn’t know whether someone was going to come and take our order, but it turned out you had to go to the till to do it. Service wasn’t great. After we ordered our food, we waited for a reasonable amount of time. We were sat right next to the kitchen, and boy was there some coughing and loud sniffing going on in there. I hoped my food was prepared hygienically, and I know it’s hard with coughs and colds going around, but it’s a off-putting hearing it coming loud from the kitchen where your food is being prepared. Anyway, needless to say I hardly touched my food. The place could do with some serious change. Staff and interior needs a revamp. I think it used to be spoken of quite highly but that’s history, not sure whether management has changed but it’s was overall a very underwhelming and disappointing experience being there. Returned to this place after a long time and was fairly shocked by the unfriendly reception when I got to the end of the queue with my two kids.

The person taking orders appeared to be a manager and fairly dominating. When my kids and I approached the till to place our order, she launched into insisting for my table number - no greeting, no queries made about dine in vs takeaway. When I stated I dont have a table number, she turned off the shop music and loudly stated she wont take an order without a table number and that I should have read the policy at the top of their menu before entering the premises (note I was never handed a menu and there no apparent signs to state this requirement either). Meanwhile, there was a shop full of customers staring at my kids and I as she proceeded to speak to us in a condescending tone. I was in fact only there for a takeaway but was not allowed to finish my sentence and misled subsequently into thinking they weren't doing takeaways. I tried my best to descalate the situation as I could see my kids looking tense and upset. You could tell that the staff working there were not happy either. It was a horrible experience for us and my kids voiced that they felt ill treated.I note there are other reviews complaining about the same individual and I sense this is not a one-off event.
