The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet – A Modern Icon in Oslo

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, located at the Oslo waterfront in Bjørvika, is one of Norway’s most impressive cultural landmarks. Opened in 2008, this striking building has won international awards for its architectural design, created by the renowned Norwegian firm Snøhetta. The white marble roof slopes down to the fjord, inviting visitors to walk up and enjoy panoramic views of the Oslo skyline and Oslofjord.

Inside, the Opera House is home to world-class performances in opera, ballet, and classical music. The main auditorium, with its rich oak interior and excellent acoustics, creates a truly immersive experience. Whether you’re attending a full-scale opera, a modern ballet, or a solo recital, the artistic quality is consistently outstanding.

Beyond its performances, the building itself is worth a visit. It features public art, open spaces, and guided tours that give insight into the production process behind the scenes. The opera’s café and restaurant offer excellent food with scenic views, making it a great stop even for those not attending a show.

The Opera House is not just a venue – it’s a symbol of Oslo’s modern identity and commitment to culture. Its open and accessible design reflects the inclusive spirit of the city. Whether you're a seasoned opera lover or a curious first-time visitor, the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is an unforgettable experience.

Highly recommended – both for the art and...

This is one of the most visited place for us. We come for ballet, concerts and operas.

The toilet line for ladies whenever there is a performance is pretty hopeless... But in general the place is well thought through with garderobe, sitting pillows etc. Well equipped also if you are going for an opera piece: every seat has a small screen for showing subtitles. They also offer different price levels so that everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy the shows.

If you are not here for the shows, opera house is open for public. You can just go in and see the architecture or go on to the roof for a stroll and...

The Oslo Opera House is nothing short of spectacular! From the moment you approach this incredible structure, it becomes clear that this is more than just a venue for opera and ballet—it's an experience in itself 😍 The Oslo Opera House is a must-visit, whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a lover of the performing arts, or simply looking to experience one of Oslo's most iconic landmarks. It represents the perfect blend of form and function, offering both a visual feast and a rich cultural experience. I highly recommend spending time here, even if it's just to walk on the roof and soak...

An architectural wonder of the city of Oslo. Culture, art and history lovers will enjoy their visit to this magnificent monument. The architecture is modern, sober, airy and especially spacious. Do not hesitate to go inside to visit the place. If however you want to attend an opera or ballet performance, you will have to reserve beforehand! If you are lucky, the roof can be opened and you can go up on the roof to take pictures of the city of Oslo, its port and its beautiful lights!

A great way to experience Oslo is to see an opera here. I have been three times and enjoyed each visit more than the last. The tickets are not out of reach (I am from the USA) and the easy to use surtitles are available in English, Norwegian or can be switched off. The hall is warm and the acoustics are fantastic. The orchestra and singers could be heard even at the quietest of pianissimos. There is a cafe, restaurant and free coat check.
