Pachacutec may be called the most important of all Incas, for without his tactical insight the kingdom of Cuzco might have been conquered by the Chancas, the greatest enemies of the Incas. Initially, Viracocha Inca had named Pachacutec's brother as successor, but by defeating the Chancas, Pachakutiq Inka Yupanki ("Reformer of the World with Honor") would eventually become the ninth Sapa Inka. During his reign, the territory of the Inca Empire was greatly expanded and the administrative division was reformed into the Tawantinsuyu ("Land of the Four Regions").
