Currently really lacking. The ground floor has some very brief details about the history of Nowa Huta, some very niche thematic display boards without useful context, and a lot of displays about the potential future redevelopment of Central Plaza, which isn't very useful to visitors interested in learning about the history of NH. The basement exhibition about bunkers in NH is interesting but is quite a specific element of the history of the area.
Where are the details about how NH was designed, different architectural/urban design theories, whether the theories of communist planning worked in reality. It was free to visit because I went on Wednesday - I'd have been annoyed if I'd paid.
I understand that the museum is currently being reorganised (only the ground floor and basement were open), but my advice is to go straight to the gift shop and buy this guide for 24zl and then leave, it has far more useful details about NH than the exhibitions...
Read more2024: there is a very interesting exhibit about antiestablishment music in Poland during the communism time (1945-89) - from once forbidden and persectuted jazz, through rock to punk. It ia a great museum for history buffs but also technology enthusiasts: you can see antique equipment to make and play music. Sadly the place doesn't have AC, but you can cool down in the basement - there is a permenanet exhibit about the Cold War/shelters and bunkers built in Nowa Huta.
I would like to recommend the amazing museum shop: lots of authentic glassware, knickknacks and gadgets from the PRL (communist Poland) era. many great ideas for unique gifts and souvenirs. the lady who runs the business is very knowledgeable about the merchandise and its history. also books about this period of Polish history and...
Read moreRecommended by a friend I arrived in Nova Huta a bit without a plan. The museum tho was worth a visit to slide a little more into the history of the cold war and its aftermaths. On the first level they created a lovely area to bring history closer to a child's mind. They brought up old toys, child books and interactive stuff and prepared it very lovely for the little ones to make history fun.
Downstairs you'll find part of the nuklear bunker system. They made quiet an effort explaining the old technical mechanism and explained the history and origin of this kind of place very well. I suggest you gotta be a reader tho and interested in this kind of history. Maybe not that much for a casual daytrip. All in all you might spend a very worthy hour...
