Let's set the record straight. Go to Centralny in Nowa Huta for the experience, not for the food.
A vestige of Poland's Communist past, Bar Mleczny Centralny is in the "preserved" neighborhood of Nowa Huta, an ersatz Utopian planned Socialist community. Rows upon Rows of proletariat housing were built surrounded by lovely green spaces. What was once a Communist ideal has become a reasonable housing choice for middle-class Krakow.
In the middle of this Socialist nirvana sits Bar Mleczny Centralny, an inexpensive cantine serving cheap local food in an unadorned room. Hey, it's a cafeteria, Brezhnev style. Read moreA proper old school, old fashioned bar mleczny, frozen in time and none the worse for that. A long narrow room with kitchen at the back, the queue wasn't too long and service was fast. Guessing no English spoken, but you may get lucky!
We had soup, which was fine, not trying to be anything other than a filling meal. Full of locals, zero tourists (except us!) and a real slice of life out in Nowa Huta; as I say, frozen in time and a great experience... come here before things change, which I hope...
