What a surprise! Tucked away on a tiny sidestreet (Rua do Anjo, leading off Rua Dr Avelino Germano) is the VERY recently restored Torre Da Alfandega. Only opened on August 2024, most online guides don't mention it. Fantastic internal access through a set of easy stairs or a modern lift, you are treated to a beautiful view of the city. Internal walls have been sympathetically restored. The attendant was DELIGHTFUL. He showed us to the stairs and explained that admission is FREE! There’s not much left in Portugal that is free, so ENJOY!

Guimarães has a significant historical importance due to the role it played in the foundation of Portugal. The city is often referred to as the "birthplace of Portugal" or "the cradle city" (Cidade Berço in Portuguese) because it is widely believed that Portugal's first King, Afonso Henriques, was born there, and also due to the fact that the Battle of São Mamede – which is considered the seminal event for the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal – was fought in the vicinity of the city.[2]

It is a wall with the words Aqui Nasceu Portugal written high up. The wall looks like either the battlements of a castle or possibly a former city wall. The wall could be more modern than either. The important point is that Portugal was born here in Guimaraes because it was the first capital of Portugal and the birthplace of King Afonso Henriques in 1112 and he vanquished The Moors in 1139 at the battle of Ourique, after which he was proclaimed King of Portugal by his troops.

Here in 1128 some of the main political and military events took place, which would lead to independence and the birth of a new Nation. The city of Guimarães is historically associated with the foundation of Portuguese nationality and identity. For this reason, it is inscribed in one of the towers of the old city wall "Here was born Portugal", a historical and cultural reference for national residents and visitors.

Once Guimaraes fortified walls embrassed the whole town, starting from the castle. The construction can be attributed to King Dinis, although it was actually started by Afonso 111. Nowadays, only a small visible section that goes along Alberto Sampaio Avenue remains from the original imposing walls, besides a part of the Alfandega Tower, next to the Toural Square.

This is just an old Roman wall that was left to stand in the city. You wouldn't even know it was here unless you were looking for it or knew if it. I walked by it twice and only noticed it from the park on the other side of the street. Nothing spectacular. Just a photo opp.
