If you ever visit Nazaré, you definitely have to check out the Farol de Nazaré. The entrance to the museum is just €2, and it’s totally worth it. Inside, you get to see some of the big riders’ surfboards up close, which is pretty amazing, and there’s also an expert explanation about how Mother Nature creates those monstrous waves. It really helps you understand why Nazaré is such a special place for big-wave surfing.

But the best part? Walking up to the little red lighthouse. That’s the closest you can get to the drop zone, where those insane waves break. Unfortunately, when I was there, the waves were only 2 to 3 meters, which the locals basically consider flat.

If you’re driving, I’d recommend parking in town and taking the beautiful windy walk down...

Visited on a Friday in September — the waves weren’t as big as in winter, but it was still really nice and calm (not windy either). The views are great and definitely worth it.

We also went into the small museum. Entry is €2 (no student discount). It’s cheap, but the exhibition is limited: mainly a photography gallery and some surfboards. Interesting if you’re into surfing and the history of Nazaré, but otherwise not a must-see.

There’s also an option to take a drive up/down the ramp for €2.50 per person, but in my opinion it’s not really worth it — the walk is short and easy enough for most people.

Overall, a nice visit, especially if you’re curious about Nazaré’s...

Great location to see the biggest waves in the world. There are a few sites to track the waves but forecasts are only accurate for a few days so plan to come to Nazaré on short notice when the forecast predicts big surf or to wait for long periods of time to see the big waves.

Best time to see this crazy spectacle is between October and March during the Portugal Winter Season.

There is a cheap shuttle up and down to the lighthouse and you can enter the lighthouse and find some interesting facts.

To the left you will often find fisherman dropping their lines off the cliffs, it is a strange place to fish but they must be trying to...
