This fortress from the 16th century, constructed to fight the pirate attacks on the city of Nazaré and turned into a light house for the local fishermen in the early 20th century. It has become a pilgrimage place for those admiring the surf sport and there is now a small museum exhibiting the surf boards of famous surfers. When I visited in the beginning of January 2025 there was also a beautiful exhibition of photographs taken of the sea and big waves in various weather conditions by two local photographers. Most impressive! Outside on the low walls facing south there is a beautiful installation of seagulls honoring the past and present history of the fortress made by ceramics and metal by the Portuguese artist Mario Reis. The surfing is taking place on the northern side of the peninsula where the geological underwater formation favors the creation of waves that have been reported to reach up to 30 m in height, considered to be the biggest on the globe. I was lucky enough to experience some of the exhilarating surfing conditions during my visit. If you are lucky you can find place on the terrace of the fortress during surfing days, paying the entrance fee of 2 EUR. There is a shuttle that can take you back and forth from the town for a small fee if you...
