The People's Salvation Cathedral (Romanian: Catedrala Mântuirii Neamului), also known as the National Cathedral (Romanian: Catedrala Națională), is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral under construction in Bucharest to serve as the patriarchal cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church. It is located in central Bucharest on Spirea's Hill (Arsenal Square), facing the same courtyard as the Palace of Parliament which is the heaviest building in the world, the cathedral having a tenth of its weight and about 24% of its volume. Situated behind the Palace of Parliament, this will make it 50 metres taller than the Palace, and will help to make the cathedral an iconic landmark in the city. The People's Salvation Cathedral is 86.2 metres (283 ft) above sea level, and at 135 metres (443 ft) height (ground-cross), holds a dominant position in Bucharest's cityscape, being visible from all approaches to the city.

This is a monument to Romania's greed and megalomania. It seems imposing from a distance, but if you come any closer, you see that this megastructure is generally ugly, devoid of any ornamentation. It seems to be built from ordinary concrete. It's still under construction. They are currently finishing a huge collumnade directly copying Bernini's design from Rome. It doesn't like like a holy place. For beautiful monumental churches see the one in Sofia or any medieval gothic cathedral in Europe.

Amazing church (as a tourist). Still under construction so cannot enter but worth seeing. However, I can see the problems and issues with this construction project as it is monumentally unnecessary financially to divert public funds from more needed infrastructure: roads, hospitals, education etc. A shame to see that this investment isn’t being used for the good of the locals and residents of Bucharest & Romania.

I see a lot of Romanians criticizing the project as a waste of money. It explains a lot of why Romania is where it is, compared to other post-communist nations.

First of all, the cathedral was built more from the Church’s money and believers donation than from public funding. For the portion that came from public funding, they used the same tools/application as others to receive funding for a project that will showcase the art and greatness of Orthodoxy in the country (which is the Church’s mission as an organization). If you’re a non-believer, just take it as an artistic touristic attraction that will attract religious and art tourists.

Second, for those saying the public money should’ve been used for infrastructure… how is that the church’s fault. For 30 years politicians you elected did nothing. Hold them accountable for hundreds of billions going nowhere. No, instead you criticize the organization that actually follows through with their mission. The church’s mission is to build churches not roads. That is the politician’s job. Hold them accountable.

As a lat side note, from what I know the church does more for poor people and orphans in Romania than the state so really, I think you should direct your anger in...

For those complaining that state funds were used. How many churches were destroyed by the Socialist Republic of Romania? How much was the Church discriminated against and prevented from growing? The state is in debt to the Church, and these donations are the LEAST they can do. Were it not for Communism, Orthodoxy (and Romania) would be far more advanced right now.

People complain that schools, roads, and hospitals aren’t being built. Whose fault is that? Is it not the corrupt politicians that YOU 🫵🏻 voted for? Communism fell in 1989, and construction of the cathedral began in 2010. You had 21 years to build roads, hospitals, and schools but you kept voting for the same thieves. Attack the politicians who lie & steal, not the Church which does its job of building churches.

The Romanian Orthodox Church is by far the most charitable organization in Romania. There are more schools, hospitals, charities, and orphanages operated by BOR than by any other institution. How can you say you want schools & hospitals, but then attack the very institution which provides them? This just shows you don’t care for schools or hospitals, it’s just an excuse to feed your...
