The apartment-museum at Stremyannaya 8 is devoted not to Shostakovich but to the Samoilov family of actors. It is the only one of its kind in St. Petersburg.
The composer Dmitry Shostakovich was born in St. Petersburg at Podolskaya 2, where there is now a school, No. 267.
From 1914-1933 he lived 9 Marat St, Apt. 7 (ul. Marata, d.9, kv.7). The Shostakovich apartment-museum (on the fifth floor) was opened to the public as a private museum in 2006, the year of the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth. Some of the exponents belonged to the Shostakovich family. Some are those typically found in the apartments of intellectuals at the time. The piano, for example, is not original but is the same make and type as that when Dmitry Shostakovich lived there.
