HOW TO GET IN: go to the top gate (the one opposite the hospital) not the bottom gate (the makeshift washing line). If you loiter there for two minutes an employee will come and open for you. Rust en Vreugd is the strangest tourist attraction in Cape Town. The beautiful facade and garden conceal a deteriorating interior, most of which is empty, some of which is packed with modern furniture. The gardens are shabby, totally neglected. The lavendar bushes must be as old as the House. Pathways forlorn, just a mess. There are a large number of staff, not sure why. There is nothing going on.
