Gahoe Folk Painting Museum — Attraction in Seoul

I visited the Gahoe MinWha Museum of Korean Folk Painting and saw a special exhibition of Magpie and Tiger paintings. The museum usually keeps original traditional folk paintings, but this time, artists from the association reinterpreted the Magpie and Tiger in creative and fun ways. It was a really great experience.

Visitors can also try painting folk art themselves. The modern folk paintings are available for purchase at a very reasonable price of about 400,000 won, which makes them valuable collectibles. Gahoe Minhwa Museum Welcome to the leading museum of Minhwa (Korean folk paintings).

The museum was founded in honor of Dr. Cho Ja-yong, a Harvard graduate who dedicated his life to promoting Korean culture. Today, Director Yoon Yeol-soo continues this mission by preserving traditional Minhwa and nurturing new artists through the Gahoe Academy and the Contemporary Minhwa Competition.

강원도 영월군의 조선민화박물관과 함께 민화 전문박물관으로, 2002년 문화재전문위원과 민학회 회장을 역임한 윤열수(尹烈秀)가 개관하였다. 250여 점의 민화와 750점의 부적, 150점의 전적류 및 기타 민속자료 250여 점 등 주로 조선시대의 유물을 1,500여 점 소장하고 있다.

대지 132㎡의 ㄱ자형 전통한옥을 박물관으로 이용하는 유일한 곳으로, 50㎡ 규모의 전시실과 체험장, 다도실로 구성되어 있다. 전시실에는 민화와 주술적 신앙이 반영되어 있는 벽사그림 외에 통일신라시대의 인면와(人面瓦), 귀면와(鬼面瓦), 다양한 부적과 부적병풍이 전시되어 있지만, 소장유물을 모두 보여줄 공간이 부족하여 다양한 기획전 형태로 전시한다. 관람 후 체험장에서 직접 부적을 찍거나 기와 탁본 뜨기, 민화 까치호랑이 색칠하기 및 민화부채 그리기 등을 할 수 있다. 또한 차문화를 바로 알고 전통문화의 뿌리를 찾기 위한 다도교실, 전국 초등학생 민화그리기 대회, 민화 아카데미 등...
