Distant observation of an Ancient City Gate
This massive city gate, a historical structure that has survived to the present day, exhibits significant discoloration likely due to pollution. Currently inaccessible to the public, it can only be viewed from outside or in a distance, it offers visitors a perspective on the integration of historical and modern architectural styles. Future access is hoped for.
GETTING HERE Heunginjimun Gate (흥인지문 興仁之門) is located at the intersection of subway lines 1 and 4, at Dongdaemun Station (동대문역). The gate is within easy reach of exit 1 or exits 6–10 of this station.
INTRODUCTION Heunginjimun Gate (흥인지문 興仁之門), also known as Dongdaemun (동대문 東大門), one of the four main gates of Hanyang (漢陽), the capital of Joseon Dynasty, and is the main gate on the east. Heunginjimun is the largest gate along with Sungnyemun ( 숭례문 崇禮門) in Seoul, and also the only ones with two-story gate towers.
ITS HISTORY Initially built during the reign of King Taejo in the late 14th century, it was subsequently rebuilt in 1453 and underwent a significant reconstruction in 1869 under King Gojong. This grand gate served as the primary eastern gateway of the fortified city of Seoul, and its semicircular barbican, added during the reign of King Sukjong, distinguishes it from other city gates. While the surrounding walls have largely disappeared with urban development, Heunginjimun remains a significant historical landmark, symbolizing Seoul's past and enduring...

The Korean name "Dongdaemun" means "Great East Gate," and it was so named because it was the major eastern gate in the wall that surrounded Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. The gate is located at Jongno 6-ga in Jongno-gu.
The structure was first built by King Taejo during his fifth year of reign (1398). It was renovated in 1453, and the current structure is the one rebuilt in 1869. Heunginjimun shows architectural style of the late Joseon period. The most unusual characteristic is its built outer wall, Ongseong. Ongseong was constructed to compensate the weakness of the target from multiple invaders. It protects the gate and is a beautiful addition.[1]

Read moreWe planned to go to Heunginjimun Gate via Hyewhamun Gate (Naksan Mountain Trail) but we got lost because it was already night and we were not able to see where the trail starts. So we decided to hop on a bus instead and head straight to Heunginjimun Gate. It's really beautiful! Even if we got lost, we still enjoyed it because the gate is lighted up during the night and we were able to see its beauty with all the lights on which is really, really cool! If you decide to go here during the day, I recommend that you try the Naksan Mountain Trail from Hyewhamun Gate which will also pass by the Ihwa Mural Village (just search Google on how to get there) . The trail is open 24 hours a day so you can enjoy it any time. Just be quiet if you decide to go during the night or early morning as you'll be passing by lots of residential areas. The end of the trail, which is the Heunginjimun Gate, is also close to Dongdaemun Market where you can buy lots of stuff. Just make sure that you check the market schedule.
DEFINITELY A MUST-VISIT IN SEOUL!
