광화문의 열린 문화 공간 1926년에 지은 광화문 동아일보 옛 사옥에는 일민미술관이 자리 잡고 있다. 세월의 흔적이 묻어나는 건물을 따라걷다가 오른쪽으로 살짝 돌아서면 유리와 스틸을 이용한 현대적인 감각의 또 다른 외관을 만난다. 일민미술관은 문화재로 지정되어 있어서 보수 공사가 부분적으로만 이루어지기 때문에 미술관 오른쪽 외관만 현대식 건물로 새롭게 태어난 것이다. 낮에는 투명한 유리를 통해 들어오는 따스한 햇살이 환하고 포근하게 미술관을 감싸고 있다면, 밤에는 화이트 조명이 유리, 스틸과 어울려 빛을 내뿜는 것처럼 밝고 화려하다. 낮처럼 환한 광화문 밤거리를 걸어본 사람들은 모두 눈에 띄게 빛나고 당당한 모습으로 자리를 지키고 서 있는 일민미술관 건물을 보았을 것이다. 일민미술관은 평생을 언론과 문화 진흥에 헌신한 고(故) 일민 김상만 선생의 유지를 기려 설립한 일민문화재단에서 운영하고 있다. 1994년 일민문화관으로 개관했으며, 현재는 본 건물 3개 층을 개조하여 1, 2층에는 3개의 전시실을, 3층에는 일민 컬렉션 상설 전시실을 갖추고 있다. 일민미술관은 개관 이후 한국 미술 발전에 적극적으로 기여하기 위해 정식 미술관으로 등록하고 활발하게 전시회를 열기 시작했다. 2001년 전면적인 리노베이션을 시작하여 2002년 대형 전시실과 일민 컬렉션을 갖춘 현재의 모습으로 재개관했다. 공간은 다양하게, 전시는 실험적으로 전통을 지키면서 미래를 재창조하는 역할을 하고자 하여 1, 2층의 전시실에는 진보적인 작가들의 실험적인 작품을 주로 선보이고 있다. 미술 전시 외에도 다양한 공간이 자리하고 있는데, 4층에 있는 다큐멘터리 아카이브도 그중 하나다. 이곳은 국내외의 다큐멘터리 영상물과 비디오 아트를 중심으로 자료를 수집하여 보관하고 있는 ‘다큐멘터리 도서관’이라고 생각할 수 있다. 일반인들에게 다큐멘터리 작품을 감상할 수 있는 공간과 기회를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 다큐멘터리 촬영에 필요한 장비도 대여해주니 관심 있는 사람들은 직접 창작에 나서볼 수 있다. 미술관 1층에는 카페와 아트숍이 있다. 특히 카페 ‘이마(imA)’는 광화문에서 와플과 햄버그스테이크로 유명하며, 아이스크림과 생크림, 제철 과일을 곁들이는 와플맛은 수준급이다. 점심과 저녁 시간에는 예약을 하지 않으면 최소 30분...
