Chosen sign: Totoro character outside a Bar in Itaewon
Code preference: choice of language of sign is in Korean, to showcase the idea that this place is in Korea, where native-speakers should be able to understand. The use of Korean, with the phrase "모모의 기묘한 모험" ("Momo's Bizarre Adventure"), uses the local language directly. This choice suggests the sign’s primary audience is Korean-speaking locals or visitors who understand Korean. The cute character “Totoro” adds a layer of cross-cultural appeal. The combination of this character with Korean text exemplifies a "globalised" approach, by adapting a global anime icon in a way that is familiar and accessible to the local audience. Inscription: The visual design of the sign, incorporating Totoro, and the use friendly or playful fonts and star symbols reflects the character’s cute aesthetic. This style adds a sense of an informal, light-hearted atmosphere. Overall, the inscription’s choice of language and cultural references taps into a specific aesthetic: a blend of nostalgia and a cute character known to all, that might attract younger audiences or fans of Japanese anime culture. Emplacement: Located in Itaewon, a in Seoul known for its nightlife and vibrant atmosphere, this sign Taps on Itaewon’s reputation for attracting locals and tourists who enjoy unique and eclectic experiences. Itaewon’s context as a cultural hub means the sign’s mix of Korean language with Japanese anime culture references would stand out, especially for visitors familiar with Totoro or anime culture. It might entice passersby, encouraging them to explore what appears to be a ”chill” bar. The placement outside a bar indicates the establishment’s desire to project an inviting identity, a space where people can enjoy a...

Let's work hard to beat...
