Puerta del Carmen — Attraction in Ávila

The lady at the ticket counter asked if I was going to be in town for another day, and I wondered why... once I got up to the wall and staring walking, at a certain point, I knew why she told me that. The wall enveloped the entire town, and it reminded me of the Great Wall of China by how long and daunting it seemed. The views were killer, and I got great photos, I only wished I had gone to the bathroom before starting, since there was only one way up the wall, and to make the trek three times to complete the whole thing seemed illogical to me. Word to the wise, even if you don't feel you have to, GO TO THE BATHROOM, before you climb up. The fee I believe was 9, I'm not too sure, but there is a discounted price for 13 thru 18 year olds,...

La puerta del Carmen es una de las principales puertas de acceso a la muralla. ¿Por qué puerta del Carmen? Porque de aquellas se adosaba un convento Carmelita.

Un dato curioso es que a esta puerta también se le llamaba "La puerta de la Cárcel", porque después del convento, pasó a ser la Cárcel Provincial. Sobre sus restos se ha levantado el Archivo Histórico Provincial.

Lo más característico es la espadaña( es un campanario que solo está formado por una pared y entre los huecos si situaban las campanas). Sobre esta espadaña es donde se asientan los nidos de algunas cigüeñas pero cuando yo fui no pude ver ninguno. Una pena.

Otro dato curioso de la puerta es su entrada, ya que hay que hacer un giro para poder entrar. No se entra en linea recta como casi todas. Esta táctica se utilizaba en la arquitectura militar musulmana, ya que garantizaba una mejor defensa al impedir un ataque frontal.
