Ibiza’s Castle: D’alt de Vila: Wonderful panoramic views, a treasure trove of history. Overall, a very interesting place with an amazing story to tell... Uphill to get up to the cathedral about 20 minutes or longer depending on how fit you are. Perched on a small mountain overlooking the sea and a bird's eye view of the town with a series of terraces from which you will have privileged views of the bay and town and take pictures like crazy. Lots to see and do. The Cathedral, the museum, a contemporary art gallery. You could spend a whole day if you are keen on history. There are several trendy restaurants scattered along the way. A few shops too, but its the walls of the fortress that enclose a couple of thousand year's history which are there visible to the eye though sometimes hard to see because of all the alterations it has endured over centuries. Original Roman road Which has worn over time, so the cobblestone can be a bit slippery. It's quite a hill too, but you can stop to catch your breath on the way up whilst delighting yourself with the most amazing views. I’d recommend walking shoes or trainers which have a better grip on the sole. Don’t forget to take something to drink, especially in Summer. It requires a little effort to get to the top, but. Well...
Read moreThe Almudaina, now adjoined to the Castle, was originally the administrative and military headquarters of the Moslem 'Wali'.
The Almudaina is a fortified site that held the military and administrative installations of the Moslem 'Wali'. It has an elongated plan and there are nine square towers on the premises. Also in the 18th century, the Almudaina was adjoined to the Castle after a section of the wall and the tower that was between both buildings collapsed. The building underwent a number of renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries (kitchens,...
Read moreGreat place, must see!! Great view :) beautiful place. The whole of the Old Town of Ibiza (Dalt Vila) has become an outdoor museum with signs that lead you through the citadel's history and multitude of medieval buildings towards the castle at the centre. When the Arabs ruled Ibiza (Yebisah) they built a large fortress, much of which is left standing today as later buildings have been built around it. Evidence of the Punic period and the Moorish occupation were discovered in the excavations of the castle.
There are two main defensive structures still standing now. The "Baluarte de Sant Jaume" currently has an exhibition on the weapons used to defend the walls of Ibiza, showing visitors how the use of firearms affected the structure of the buildings. The "Baluarte de Sant Pere", on the other hand, houses an exhibition explaining how those walls were built, including a reproduction of...
