The gardens were created by order of the La Marquesa de Quinta Roja, Doña Sebastiana del Castillo. While planning a burial site for her relatives, she discovered that her son, Diego Ponte del Castillo, could not be interred in the family pantheon due to his associations with Freemasonry.
As a result, she decided to design an alternative burial site for her son — a beautiful garden boasting a magnificent view of the city, complete with a mausoleum at the very top. The project was undertaken by the French architect Adolph Coquet.
The gardens feature a terraced structure comprising seven levels, adorned with various flower beds and fountains. At the summit, there is a mausoleum made of white marble, supported by eight Corinthian columns. The doors of the mausoleum bear the letter omega.
Over time, additional symbols of Freemasonry have appeared throughout the gardens. There are also claims that the layout of the gardens holds specific significance, but this remains uncertain.
