Castillo de San Felipe in Puerto de la Cruz The Castillo de San Felipe is one of those places where you can still feel the historic battles fought in defense of the islands and which carries the echo of a more violent and uncertain time. The Castillo de San Felipe is located about one kilometer from the city center of Puerto de la Cruz and right next to the leisure facilities of Playa Jardín. The Castillo de San Felipe had a defensive mission to ward off pirate attacks and was also used as a base station. Although this was the purpose for which it was built, over time it has found many uses, for example it was for a time a hospital, a warehouse, a shooting club and even a restaurant. In recent years it has even been used for concerts and exhibitions. It can be said that the Castillo de San Felipe has been kept in good condition thanks to the remodeling and innovations that are carried out on a regular basis. It currently serves as a cultural space. The Castillo de San Felipe was declared a Cultural Asset and Artistic Historical Monument in 1949 and is part of the Historical Heritage of Spain.

The place was closed when we went at around 11.00, returned a little later and it was still closed. There were no signs to say what was happening and whether they were opening on that day or not. Only a sign saying closed.

A little castle by the beach, but unfortunately it was closed when we visited. The courtyard had cannons out the front. Their were building works in the vicinity and lovely views over the beach and ocean

The Castle is very small but well built. Interestingly it has a draw bridge with a couple of cannons displayed in front of it. While I was there opening times were advertised but it was actually closed. I was quite disappointed. If you like castles, you won't want to miss this. There is another at Martinez quay which also displays cannon and takes about 15 minutes walk...

Historically interesting, although not usually open to the public, it is more of a gun emplacement than a castle. It overlooks a black sand volcanic beach and forms part of a footpath than runs along the shore with good views of the ocean, and pleasant displays of cacti and succulents in...
