The Castillo de San Felipe is one of those places where you can still feel the historic battles fought in defense of the islands and which carries the echo of a more violent and uncertain time.

The Castillo de San Felipe is located about one kilometer from the city center of Puerto de la Cruz and right next to the leisure facilities of Playa Jardín.

The Castillo de San Felipe had a defensive mission to ward off pirate attacks and was also used as a base station.

Although this was the purpose for which it was built, over time it has found many uses, for example it was for a time a hospital, a warehouse, a shooting club and even a restaurant.

The Castle is very small but well built. Interestingly it has a draw bridge with a couple of cannons displayed in front of it. While I was there opening times were advertised but it was actually closed. I was quite disappointed. If you like castles, you won't want to miss this.
