The troubles and vicissitudes, however, through which it passed, were happily brought to an end by the wise rule of Abbot Benedict Sigrist in the 17th century, who is justly called the restorer of his monastery. Alienated possessions and rights were recovered by him and the good work he began was continued by his successors, under whom monastic discipline and learning have flourished with renewed vigour. The library, which is said to have contained over twenty thousand volumes and two hundred choice manuscripts, was pillaged by the French in 1798. Ironically, in the spirit of learning and preservation of knowledge, the library contains to this day a complete set of the writings of Martin Luther. Read moreWe were in Engelberg one rainy summer day in 2022. We had come to see the mountains and the abbey. Sadly, it was too overcast to see much of the mountains and Engelberg itself felt rather like a ghost town. We walked along the empty streets up to the abbey where we had booked a tour. The abbey is the crowning jewel of the town. It’s beautiful and has been home to some amazingly artistic monks for centuries. The gardens surrounding the abbey are an inspiration. Who knew you could do such cool edging with terracotta pots!
The monk who led us around was so friendly and accommodating. Tours are usually only offered in German, but he alternated between German and English since there were a few English speakers on the tour that day. They usually just have printed explanations in English to explain what you are seeing.
Highlights of the tour included exquisite woodwork and marquetry, the adjoining chapel, and an impressive display of antique medieval books. Visiting the abbey is well worth your time if you are spending the day in Engelberg.
Tickets must be purchased ahead of time and are only offered a few times each week. Also be aware that you must be comfortable climbing a few...
