這次有緣來 2020 年台灣設計展，其實還有另一個目的，就是想參觀經過整修後首度開放的新竹州圖書館。展出內容其實沒有什麼，主要就是想來看這個老建築物。

其實現為新光人壽財產的新竹州圖書館，當年乃是為了紀念 1923 年身為太子的日本昭和天皇裕仁來台灣旅行訪問而興建，原名「新竹街圖書館」，但於 1925 年七月完工、八月正式開館後就改稱「新竹州圖書館」。其建築師是宇敷赳夫，本身建物為鋼筋混凝土建築，莊嚴氣派。

二戰後遂改稱「新竹市立圖書館」，並隨著新竹市改制為縣轄市後又改名為「新竹縣立圖書館」。話說日治時期全台共有三座獨棟公共圖書館，第一座位於台南但業已拆除；第二座即是新竹州圖書館，保存最為完整；第三座則是台中州圖書館，現為合作金庫。

為何會變成新光人壽的財產呢？那是因為在民國七十三年（1984 年）新竹縣政府將若干閒置的土地與建物標售，由新光人壽標得包括新竹州圖書館在內的十九筆土地，準備興建大樓。但是後來出了一些用地問題，隨後新竹州圖書館又於民國八十七年（1998年）被指定為市定古蹟，不得拆除。 2018年新光人壽同意進行修繕並進行活化再利用，且新竹市文化局也成功向文化部爭取了五千多萬元的經費，遂在整修後於這次 2020 年台灣設計展正式開放參觀。

未來呢？據說以後可能規劃成複合式書店，試想這一整間出租給誠品的感覺⋯⋯...
