This place is beautiful, but I could not imagine finding this place without a local guide being hired, which we did - or planning this through a tourism group.
It's a car/bus ride up, about 2 hours or so, from the base of the mountain. Another hour or so from Taipei. It's deep up into the mountains, with steep but BEAUTIFULl views and winding turns that would make any fellow invidual with car sickness - miserable. I survived, though. You can, too. I would recommend something for motion sickness, though.
At the top sits the city. Before you enter, you'll be greeted with a sign that says "beware pickpockters." Jiufen is filled with little alley ways weaving through with various shops and food stands. Smoothie stands, potatoes on a stick, gift shops. There are tons of small stops. Themed Totoro and Spirited away merchandise. You will see the famous ocarina man playing or making his instruments for you. It's actually pretty cool to witness. Once you get towards the end of the trail, you will finally get to the Instagram worthy Spirited Away tea house. With everyone and their mom huddled in the stairways for the perfect moment to take the picture.
We didn't experience a wait at the actual teahouse, but we did luck out and get the last table. It was outside, which came with the consquence of blistering heat and the humidity of September. WE CAME THIS FAR for tea, so we shall drink it, lol. Plus, it was nice to sit. The view of the mountains, the beach in the distance - was indeed worth just sitting and staring at. Humans are amazing..building teahouses this frickin' high up in the middle of nowhere. Really! 🤔
Like most instagramable places, the tea was mid, and the side pastry set was mid. The experience overall was once in a lifetime.
Would I do it again? "No." Will I cherish the memories I made with friends and my boyfriend that day? 100%.
We did not pay an entrance fee. Where closed toe shoes. Be somewhat cautious when eating some of the food. If you look at your feet while walking at some point, you will see clusters of dead roaches on...
