Another must-go if you're looking to truly experience Taiwan. Getting to the Maokong Gondolas requires the same transportation you take when you go to the Taipei Zoo - the brown MRT line. You can buy a round trip ticket, one way ticket, use your EasyCard ... it really depends on what you're planning to do. Because so many people are tourists who use the Gondolas to get up the mountain, using the EasyCard is best.
There are 2 types of cable cars - the regular one and a crystal one (I believe it's transparent cable car for ever 7 regular ones?). If you go on a good day where the weather is clear, you can bet that the line for the crystal car will probably be super long. I've been on both types and the crystal cable car isn't that special if you have to wait over an hour for it. The box isn't completely transparent, but the bottom is clear so that you can get a good view of what's underneath you - which are mostly trees and shrubs.
There's several stops before you get to the top of the mountain. It's rare for people to stop, but there are some who do - maybe they live there or are visiting friends. But usually the final destination is at the very top. The one-way trip is about 13-15 minutes. The view is pretty nice and you're able to see more of the country/nature life of Taiwan.
Once you get to the top, you're able to wander around until you feel you're ready to get back to the bottom of the mountain. At the top, there's a convenience store as well as a ton of food stands that sell anything from sweet potatoes to green tea ice cream to stinky tofu. The prices aren't that cheap, but when it's cold and rainy, you're probably going to be enticed by the steam coming out of whatever they're cooking.
tl;dr - A pretty good way to spend a few hours if you're sightseeing in Taiwan. The price for the cable car ride isn't too pricey, and it's definitely a good experience if you've never ridden in one. If you plan to go to the zoo right after, you stop at one of the middle stops and take a bus...
Read moreA great means of transportation to see the mountains and city from above. The air is very fresh. Felt very safe on the move. I had to queue for about 30 minutes to get to the cabin. The price is also very cheap and convenient payment by card "Easy card". Going from "Taipei zoo station" to "Zhinan temple station" is 80 kuai and from "Zhinan temple station" to "Maokong Station" is 50 kuai. However, it seems that the cabins are old and the glass panels are blurred, making it difficult to take photos. But the price is really cheap and reasonable for a whole fresh trip with a majestic view. I will recommend many people to come here and will be back in the near future. This is a place to experience when coming to Taipei. Moreover, the end of February there are many peach blossoms to take pictures, Tea and ice cream from the tea on Maokong mountain are wonderful. When I returned, I chose to take the bus back to Taipei Zoo but had to wait a long time and there was almost no place to sit, the road was very twisty so I suggest not to...
Read moreMy favorite cable car ride to date and probably the highlight of my Taipei trip. It was reasonably priced and the crystal cabin makes it even more worth it. It's quite a long ride though so people who are afraid of heights should just choose the regular cabin or ride the bus but for those who aren't afraid, you'll have a grand time looking at Taipei and the mountains. On the other hand, you'll find a lot of food stalls when you reached the top. It was colder than main Taipei but that didn't stop me from buying the cute matcha ice cream they sell there. You can also opt for a short hike since there are many trails or spend time in the restaurants overlooking the...
