The Darajani Market, a vibrant and bustling marketplace, holds a central position within the enchanting labyrinthine streets of Stone Town, Zanzibar. This historic market is not only a hub of commerce but also a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. It boasts several monikers that reflect its significance in both local history and daily life. Known formally as the Darajani Market, it also carries the name Estella Market in honor of Countess Estella, the sister of Lloyd Mathews, who was once the esteemed Prime Minister of Zanzibar. In the Swahili tongue, it's affectionately referred to as "Marikiti Kuu," which translates to the "main market," a fitting title for this vibrant place of trade and community.

Situated along Darajani Road, this bustling market finds itself nestled in the shadows of the majestic Anglican Cathedral of Christ. Its roots trace back to 1904 when Bomanjee Maneckjee erected its primary edifice on behalf of Sultan Ali bin Hamud. Over the years, it underwent expansions and renovations, evolving into the sprawling marketplace we know today.

The heart of Darajani beats to the rhythm of commerce, primarily specializing in the vibrant and aromatic world of food. Seafood, meats, fruits, grains, and a kaleidoscope of spices form the culinary soul of this marketplace. Yet, Darajani's offerings are not limited to just gastronomic delights; it is a treasure trove of diverse merchandise. Wander its labyrinthine alleys, and you'll discover an array of shops peddling everything from cutting-edge consumer electronics to traditional clothing, providing a glimpse into the kaleidoscope of Zanzibari life. Whether you're seeking a taste of the exotic, hunting for souvenirs, or simply immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of local culture, the Darajani Market promises an unforgettable experience...

Hey there,

I am Brie and I will be in Zanzibar for two weeks as a photographer, so the opportunity is there for an unrepeatable professional photo shoot. ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿš๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ๏ธโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿฅฅ๐Ÿฉต

I welcome everyone but places are limited!

Portrait, engagement or couples photography, maternity and family photography is also available.

Nowadays, life is full of stress and complications.

Close your eyes, relax, and imagine the ocean breeze softly running through your hair, your bare feet sinking into white sand, with the most important person in your life standing right before you.

Please send your quire in private message and also highlight when and which hotel youโ€™ll be...

There are many fruits, vegetables, products, spices etc you can buy. But be careful, if you don't know the real prices, or if you knew already, the sellers will try to scam you seeing you as tourist and give you much higher prices. That was the part I didn't like at all, they are treating you like money sources and sometimes even following you till you buy their products. Just never mind them, we did encounter some people like these, some tried to act as injured etc but we ignored and moved. Just do not interact with them, and do not accept help from anyone. These are my most...

I don't get the stone town hype, glad I didn't pay for a tour of sorts, have my own car (parking secure is 2000 Shillings) And why do people think this 'bazaar' is so cool? Unless you -like the locals- shop for meat fish veggies at the market, not sure it's worth a trip Most tourist products esp the spice bags are mass market, not fresh and looks like they're bumped up with fillers Other tourist shops stick out like a sore thumb and selling typical souvenirs that gather dust at home
