One of the hidden jewels of Stone Town. Wow! Princess Salme was an enigmatic and inspirational character who acted as a free agent in 19th century Zanzibar and Germany regardless of the restrictions imposed on her as a woman. The exhibitions are thoughtful, intentional, and thought- provoking. However, the highlight is the guide and curator Said. The latter speaks with such admiration and love for Salme that one can not help but develop an interest in her life and story. The exhibition answers all of the questions one might have about Salme while still leaving a little bit of mystery for those who want to delve deeper. One can purchase her memoires at the museum. No photography is generally allowed; however, one is given the opportunity to pose with a portrait of Salme near the end. Entry fees range between $5 and $10, but it is definitely worth it if you love interesting historical characters. A highlight in our Stone Town adventure.

We were right in front of the museum, looking for it, and still couldn't find it. Google maps didn't help. We asked a young guy sitting at his shop where it was, and just then, an older gentleman walked past, and overhearing us, asked, Why didn't you just ask me? It was the museum curator, walking outside for a moment! What a delight! A personal tour with plenty of anecdotes, and he answered all of our questions. Yes, you should read the Princess's book first, at least some of it, for the most rewarding experience.

Worth a visit. Tsh 20,000 for a guided tour or 10,000 to look around yourself. The guided tour was interesting and informative. No-one else was there during my weekday lunchtime visit. No photos inside except for a photo of one information board and a "compulsory" photo of me sitting on the couch near the entrance.

Almost all story panels in words and hard to tell which are the artifacts related to Princess Salme for an entrance fee of US$5. Few explanation and description on the exhibits about this fascinating lady. Not even her book "Memoir". The staff was eager to help but with only 5 days of experience. Without the curator at a cost of US$10, the experience is limited. A pleasant surprise before I left was a photo with Orincess Salme's photo. No photography otherwise allowed inside the "museum". A few drops of clove solution and a small packet of clove to me too.

A quiet afternoon leaving much food for thought but the museum should be more organised and visitor friendly for a more...

A must-visit museum in Zanzibar! The exhibit is well-curated, small but rich in content, offering a fascinating glimpse into the extraordinary journey of Princess Salme (Emily Ruete). The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the curator is both knowledgeable and passionate about sharing her remarkable story. It's a great stop for history lovers and visitors exploring Stone Town. Entry is 20000 Tanzanian Shillings with a guided tour or 10000 if you prefer to explore on your own. I highly recommend taking the guided tour for a...
