This is split into three parts really.
The first is a visit inside the Anglican church, which is very beautiful and built around the old "Whipping Post". The church is still in use now and has a beautiful pipe organ (only 1 of 2 in Africa) - there's only one man on the island that knows how to play it so it'll be an unfortunate day when he's no longer able.
Moving on from the church there is a monument in memory of the slave trade, which is quite touching and certainly brings your own struggles etc into sharp relief. The monument actually uses some of the original 200 year old chains that bound the slaves on this site.
Indoors you go downstairs to the two rooms where they kept the men (approximately 50 in one room) and the women/children (75 in one room). There are small slits in the walls acting as a light and air source. The ceilings are too low to stand up straight. Upstairs there is quite a lot of information to read through on large boards about the slave trade, it's abolition and some real life personal histories.
There's a very sombre feel to the place and I felt a little apprehensive moving around the site.
It costs 5 USD per person to enter, we already had a guide for the day who came in with us but there are also volunteers on site that will guide you round.
There are clean bathrooms available.
A small primary school sits on the edge of the grounds and they are very welcoming to visitors and want to show...
Read moreBiggest scam I experienced on the island.
When you show up at the entrance you are approached by a random person claiming to be a guide. Guides are mandatory and they demand a tip.
Cash accepted only and they do not offer a refund despite requesting an odd number for cash payment. Of course, the visitor is the one that has to pay extra.
the guide rushed us through as fast as he could. He was an older gentleman, and was reading from his phone for all the facts. Often repeating himself up to 3 times. We asked questions, and he said wait until the end. Then disappeared at the end without answering any questions but not before collecting his demanded payment. The total tour was 20 minutes and over charged. Generally the guide was quite rude, and kept grabbing our arms to usher us through the tour faster in order to get to the next group of people.
The facility is worth seeing due to the history display and where the slaves were housed. I wish this was an entry fee only and not with the mandatory guides. I would have rather walked around alone than with the poor guide we received. If I were to do this again, I would try to get a guide that was providing a full town...
Read moreExcellent local museum very well set up and very well worded, being the son of a museum curator i was very happy! I took a walking tour from my hostel for $10, $5 was used as entrance for the museum. Water around this area is very cheap much cheaper than anywhere else. The slave chamber and museum are fascinating but depressing as hell! The monument to the slaves struggle is in excellent condition 20years later and the 2nd only Christian church is just marvelous. The head priest who abolished slavery was an amazing man who was british yet translated the Bible into Swahili and helped many former slaves convert.
The museum also houses much info about David Livingston and his help with regards to the slave trade.
The space museum is located very close to the border of stone town and the local market which is well worth a...
