The Princess Cave, or Tham Phra Nang, situated on the east side of the Railay peninsula in Krabi, holds a mystique that lures both the curious and the devout. This sacred site, steeped in local legend, is an integral part of the Railay experience, offering a glimpse into the spiritual fabric that weaves through Thai culture.

Upon approaching the cave, the palpable sense of reverence is as evident as the natural beauty that frames it. The cavern is adorned with offerings to the spirit of Phra Nang, the Princess Goddess, to whom local fishermen have paid homage for generations, asking for her blessing and protection.

The interior of the cave is a tableau of intricate stalactites and stalagmites, nature's own cathedral, where the play of light and shadow crafts an otherworldly ambiance. The cave's most striking feature, however, is the collection of phallic symbols, or lingams, brought by fishermen and boatmen, who believe these offerings will result in abundance and prosperity. These totems, ranging from the simplistic to the ornate, are a testament to the enduring belief in the goddess's powers over fertility and the sea's bounty.

The Princess Cave is a sanctuary that transcends religious boundaries, inviting visitors to ponder the age-old traditions that persist to this day. It is a place where myth and nature intertwine, where the secular and the sacred dance in silent understanding.

Surrounding the cave, the majestic limestone cliffs stand guard over the tranquil waters, and the beach offers a serene respite, where one can meditate on the stories and rituals that have found a home here. The whispers of the ocean and the quietude of the cave provide a unique opportunity for introspection.

A visit to the Princess Cave is not merely a touristic diversion but a passage into the heart of Thai folklore. It is an experience that leaves one with a deeper appreciation for the cultural reverence of nature and the intricate tapestry of belief that is woven into the stunning landscape of...

The Most “Enlightening” Cave I’ve Ever Visited – Princess Cave, Railay

Let me just say this right off the bat: I’ve seen a lot of caves in my travels — stalactites, bats, underground rivers... but nothing quite prepared me for the delightful surprise that is Princess Cave in Railay, Thailand.

Tucked into the side of the stunning Phra Nang Beach, this cave is dedicated to an ancient legend about a sea princess. Sounds mystical, right? Now imagine stepping inside and being greeted by... hundreds of wooden phalluses. Yes, you read that right. This isn’t just a sacred cave — it’s also a full-blown shrine to fertility, and apparently, the offering of choice is... well... creatively carved manhoods in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

It's a spiritual site, but also something straight out of a surreal comedy sketch. I couldn’t help but giggle (okay, laugh out loud) as I tried to keep a straight face among these enthusiastic, ahem, "offerings." But beyond the humor, it’s genuinely fascinating — both culturally and historically. Locals and fishermen have been leaving these symbols for decades as part of a deeply rooted belief in blessings, prosperity, and protection at sea.

What makes it even better is the setting: just steps from the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen, with limestone cliffs towering behind and the sea stretching endlessly ahead. You can go from sunbathing to experiencing an unforgettable cultural oddity within 60 seconds.

If you're coming to Railay and want a mix of beauty, culture, and an unexpected dose of well-endowed humor, the Princess Cave is a must-see. Bring your camera, your curiosity, and your sense of humor — you’ll need all three.

10/10 – Come for the beach, stay for the... educational...
