Our experience at the Gainsborough was everything we hoped for and more. The staff were very helpful and friendly from the moment we entered. We booked through a third party site, but we still had a complimentary bottle of red wine waiting in our room and a mini-fridge with complimentary drinks, beer, and water. We went with the executive room which was plenty big, with incredibly high ceilings and beautiful drapes. Upon arrival we reserved a time at the spa on the basement floor (level "-2"). Contrary to what we had read, we had full access to the spa baths for an entire three hour block. We were also to reserve space each day of our stay. You don't have the area to yourself, but they have 7 different spaces (pool, warm thermal bath, hot thermal bath, sauna, infrared sauna, steam room, ice room) so you can enjoy a relatively private experience. The big bath, the one you see featured in the hotel pics, has many stations with jets including a neck massage and seat massage. They have complimentary luxury hot chocolate, water, and cool face towels. The location could not have been better. We were here for the last day of the Jane Austen Festival so we were part of a promenade through the city with people in full regency dress. Everything we wanted to see was within walking distance including Bath Abbey, Jane Austen Center, Roman Baths, The Royal Crescent, and the Pulteney Bridge. The hotel is also not a far walk from the train. I wouldn't bother with the breakfast at 30 pounds per person, there are so many cool cafes and bakeries where you can get a taste of all Bath has to offer (the Pulteney Bridge Cafe has great views and the chocolate hazelnut croissants at the Cornish Bakery were mind blowing!). We ate at Joya, which was an amazing experience! The only down side to the hotel was that we could hear the steel drum buskers on the street over from the hotel play for hours during the day and some minor street noise at night. Overall we had an exceptional stay and we would definitely recommend this if you're planning a romantic, relaxing stay in Bath.

My partner and I stayed here on a fairly last minute decision for Sunday during the August bank holiday (booked on Wednesday of the same week). This is probably one of the best hotels I have stayed in from start to finish of the experience. When I was booking over the phone, Vicky explained all the services on offer and made some really good suggestions for treatments and how to split up our day with the room, spa, dinner ..etc and make the most of discounts on offer. She also took note that it was my partners birthday we were celebrating and this was noted by the staff on a number of occasions during the visit. When we arrived the room was not ready (arrived at 1pm), however we were allowed to go straight to the spa and then collect our room keys directly from the spa reception and take the cut through direct to our room when it was ready. We had a double deluxe room, which I think is their most basic, but for a couple is fine size wise. Large bed, plenty of space and well appointed with facilities. We had room service for a snack, once again great food. The mini bar is included in the costs btw..once again a nice touch. The spa itself is really nice, probably top 5 in the country. On arriving in our room not only was there a complimentary bottle of champagne on ice, but an array of chocolates and a birthday message. A nice touch. We went back to the spa later for a couples massage, which was fantastic. On returning to our room we had a personalised letter from the manager, water left by each of our bedsides and our bed remade. A nice touch given we had only checked in a few hours before and they knew we were out for a massage. We had dinner at the hotel, tasting menu and paired wines. Our waitress Sophie was really fantastic and the food and wine was spot on. Once again they knew it was my partners birthday and we had more complimentary dessert. We actually didn't finish it all, way too much food! Location wise it's perfect. We will 100% visit again.

We enjoyed a 2 night stay here for our 'mini' honeymoon and really enjoyed it. The hotel itself is very clean and the rooms are nice and big. The location is perfect as you're right in the middle of Bath, therefore all of the main attractions are within walking distance. The hotel advertises their own parking facilities, don't use these! It's not located on the hotel grounds at all, it is instead a small, narrow road away from the hotel. Can be very tricky for larger cars as the bays are very narrow. Instead I would recommend parking at the Southgate shopping carpark which is just a short walk away from the hotel. This is a new multistorey carpark with CCTV, so it felt much more secure than what the hotel parking has to offer. You can leave your car there for a few days and pay as you leave. I believe the hotel wanted something in the region of £40 a day for parking, whereas the multistorey carpark worked out £36 for 2 days. The spa facilities are really lovely, however you are only able to access the spa for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening as part of your hotel booking. If you wish to use the spa outside of these hours it's an extra £70 per person, per day. That is a bit steep in my opinion but it may be worth it if your trip is over a weekend as the spa can get very, very busy during those peak 2 hour windows. We visited on a Tuesday & Wednesday and I noticed that the Tuesday morning was empty, there were only a handful of people in the spa and it was lovely. However, the next morning the spa was so busy and honestly it felt like there were too many people for my liking. We visited the hotel restaurant on our first night and enjoyed a delicious meal. The wine menu is fantastic! The staff in the restaurant were all lovely and very helpful. I'd definitely visit here again, it's a pricey hotel but if you're looking for a relaxing few days away it's worth it in my opinion.

Having booked the trip as part of a birthday treat for my husband we couldn’t have been left more disappointed and disgusted with the hotel and its service offering. The below issues were all raised during our stay so they will come as no surprise to the management. Nothing was offered at the end of stay despite me relaying the inadequacies for a 5* hotel. Issues: 1. We were given the wrong room. Had been in said room for a while and were enjoying a bottle of wine / relaxing when another set of guests walked in unexpectedly to join us 2. We were asked to leave said room for another, which was apparently an “upgrade”, it was not. The bathroom was so filthy with mould and paint was pealing off the walls. The room was small, dark and smelt damp. It was also just above reception on floor 1 so it was incredibly noisy all night. Not relaxing at all. Clearly they’d double booked rooms and we were shoved in what was left. 3. No hair dryer; a small thing really and shouldn’t be an issue. Easy to sort. We called down 3 times for one to be sent up and we were treated like children and told to “look properly in the cupboards”. Eventually we received one after they believed us but it made us late for dinner! Didn’t particularly want to go out for dinner with soaking wet hair in January. Such a small thing to easily sort and even this was too much 4. I didn’t want to use the mouldy shower in the morning so I attempted to use the one downstairs in the spa. Only to find there was only 1 working shower in the female spa changing room so there was a queue of women simply trying to freshen up…hardly a 5* experience. Other than the location I wouldn’t have much to say that’s positive about this hotel. Money better spent elsewhere honestly.

When we initially booked the hotel, we went for a flexible rate just in case we needed to cancel. Then when we spoke to the staff for booking the hotel they provided us it’s a non-refundable rates and advised if we’re sure of our plans and closer to the time of our staying there we could convert from the flexible rate to the non-refundable rate which was cheaper. However unfortunately they said there wasn’t any availability to convert it to the non refundable rate which is very disappointing. Also, the member of who I had spoken to on the phone was very rude and unhelpful. We found the opening times of spa for guest was very unreasonable as you could only access it between 8.00am-10.00am and 7.00pm-9.00 pm. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay £50 per per person during other hours. Our first morning in the hotel at 8.00 am, we rang on the phone to order our coffee to our room and was told there’s no any room service even for a coffee until 11.00 am and this is also a subject to a tray fee of £5. We would not expect for a 5-star hotel to not have a room service during morning. Also, we had issues with our heating in the room which was a junior suit and the system is complex. The hotel kindly provided a welcome champaign for us on our first day however whenever the room was cleaned the champagne bottle and the dirty water wasn’t removed. So, we had to leave it outside of our front door. Whenever the room was cleaned shower gel, shampoo and body lotion weren’t provided enough for us- two people.
