I'll be fair and give it two star for the produce though the owner and his wife are as rude and uncouth as sin. Its not exactly cheap or well run. I don't agree with other reviews the best fish market in the UK ?????' come on , get real and travel around. Still places like this thrive because Edinburgh and our shoddy council can't get its act together and open up a proper fresh food market. I'd hazard a guess such business's wouldn't last long in that context charging posh inflated prices. Further more as other reviewers have mentioned staff have a questionable and almost discriminatory approach. If your middle aged well heeled and white I've observed the service to be a lot more along the lines of sucking up. The women I dealt with had horrible manners aggressively abrupt. The male owner is a really grumpy guy with a even shorter set of patience. They really talk to people like s;';';'t well in my case it will be the first and last time since I'll take my hard earned cash elsewhere even if it means the supper market as I can't abide rude people. Never-mind the bounty of choice. Also the shop looks ugly writing in some form of Cantonese perhaps, Spanish flag , and whats even more pretentious they had a list of specials of the day for the day written in French (how pretentious ) I went in it said "Squid and Muscles were the special's that day. However the owner despite cussing me to his wife in Cantonese beforehand had to grummply go out back and get the Squid. Yet it was in the late morning. Then he dumped them on the table and barked "here!!! " when they bagged up my first order the rude women barked "take it pick up "!!!!!! . etc and she continued to speak rudely. Actually both of them were speaking rudely to me while I hadn't had time to finalise my purchases. Then at the end of the transaction she demanded to know where I was from , when I said I'm from Edinburgh she kept on pushing like an interrogator, "Originally , originally originally " She hissed. Being as though we had not exactly been on friendly terms and the service had been disrespectful and abrupt I founds this uncomfortable and slimy.
I had my suspicions about this place passing by and all were conformed today. In future I will go to the friendly hard working lady up the road who is a born and bred local and knows how to treat people. Its just unfair that this place seems to attract hordes of clueless yuppies and the one up the road losses out. Besides the seemingly main staff in this shop can barely speak a cigarette packets worth of English. Ian Murray's Edinburgh is an...
Read moreI don't believe in writing negative reviews unless you have tried a place twice. People have bad days, you might have been having one too and take things the wrong way. Whatever the reasons, misunderstandings do happen. The fact of the matter is though that I have been at this fishmonger's twice and both times I had a really bad experience, with the staff being extremely rude. Today, I asked the man on the counter if he could clean the squid I wanted to buy. Mind you, if he had said no it would have been absolutely fine. He raised his voice as he proceeded to clean the squid, while being visibly aggressive he told me that I would have to pay a different price for it if it was cleaned. When I asked him what that price was, as I didn't want to be charged 5 pounds for a simple cleaning, he proceeded to shout at me that the difference would be only 10 pence and not to make a fuss about it. This being the second time I had been shouted at that store and quite honestly feeling uncomfortable, I asked him why he was shouting at me, only for him to deny it and then continue to shout. At that point, I just left the store. I honestly am dumbfounded about this treatment, especially since I had overheard the same man being extremely nice to the man shopping before me and I read the reviews on this place that seem to be so positive. I honestly do not understand it. Was it the fact that I am a woman, that looks younger than her age, the fact I have an accent, something else entirely? No idea. I still think it is important for bad behaviour to be called out for. Hence the review.
EDIT: I read their response, and I have to say that this is not how things happened, and certainly not the way that their employee spoke to me. I cannot help but be curious about how they could possibly have had audio through their CCTV video to fully review the incident and therefore make comments on what their employee said or his tone of voice, but at this point, I think I will leave this at that. At the end of the day, I recorded my experience of this shop so that people can make an informed decision, and should they experience something similar, they don't feel alone in it. Their comment on the number of positive reviews I think further highlights the problem with how they receive negative feedback but at the end of the day, no one can force them to take it on board, nor should they feel compelled to receive it if they...
Read moreI feel conflicted because I don't like leaving bad reviews but I have been ill for 2 days after eating the "salmon sashimi". The first time I had it nothing happened so I got a bigger £14 piece and ate half right away which was absolutely delicious. About 30 hours later, my body was sore all over and I felt feverish but had chills sometimes too so I slept for nearly 12 hours straight - next morning had stomach cramps and diarrhea so I had to skip work. The day after (today) my stomach is still a bit sore. How do I know it's the salmon? I had something extremely similar after eating salmon sushi at Soul Sushi (I had their sushi before and no problem either previously) and I'm generally very healthy. I had lived in Asia for over a decade and never had a problem eating any sashimi but had this issue twice in the last 3 years in Edinburgh so I would strongly advise against eating sashimi here even though I don't get sick every time. I really love salmon sashimi and if I didn't feel so sick I wouldn't have thrown the other half worth £7 away. I don't have any bad intentions towards the business but wouldn't wish this on...
