If bays could get the feeling of living in the shadow of a nearby bay, stay with me, then Newton Cove must have that feeling parked next to Weymouth Bay. One of them gets all the tourists, the amusement arcades and the sand sculptures, the other gets a little ice cream shack, a crabbing platform, a sea wall path and a gate with a sign telling you that you'll get chucked in the nick if you dare go a foot past it. I think it leads to a research place that makes weapons and stuff, so not surprising really.
Anyway, Newton's Cove is a weirdly quiet place, with few people around and those that are, are generally coming and going to Nothe Fort, a 5 minute walk along that sea wall path. It was opened in 2003 by none other than the actual Joseph Ross Walker of Wyke Regis Junior school. That's right, JRW himself.
The talking point of this cove though, is the ice cream shack that sells the largest whippy ice cream in the world, probably, what with the cream bit being taller than the cone by a considerable margin.
Anyway, it seems like a nice quiet place to end up, even on a bank holiday weekend, although catch it below high tide and it whiffs a bit, oh and parking's...

Read moreWas there today.... Sitting on the seawall enjoying the sun... And yarning too a holidaymaker about the good olde days of the navy. Portland harbour,dad remembers ,Americans setting off in world war two... And my favourite tale ,of the fish especially bass,getting drunk on the ullage which the brewery,Devenish( still in hope square, beautiful fascade) ,pumped out into Newton's cove...... And a fisherman named Johnny mutter would actually hook them out the ogging straight into his boat using his hands....🚣🐟🦆.
After going through the nothe gardens. Which I truly love...with a passion. Not only for the squirrels,which are fed by it seems every person from an infant too an old age pensioner.. Take some monkey nuts with you if you do go up.... And the fully matured planting and beautiful trees.......of the gardens. Newton's cove ,if you sit and look too the left your see the nothe fort.... Imposing ,built by french prisoners of war..... Still relavilivitly cheap for a family too enter and you can spend quite a few hours...
