This place should be avoided as the staff is very rude and the food is overpriced. During my visit, I ordered a dish called lamb mandi, but was served a small portion of rice which was insufficient for a main course, especially considering the cuisine. When I expressed my disappointment to the waiter and mentioned that I expected a larger portion of rice at this price point, he replied in a rude manner by saying that they are a restaurant, not a charity shop. I was shocked by this level of disrespect and received only an empty apology from the other staff who seemed to agree with the waiter's behavior. Ultimately, I paid £40 for two main courses and left the restaurant hungry and angry. Update 08.05.23: The restaurant's response to my review contained a baseless and malicious accusation, claiming that I had been shouting at their staff. This accusation is entirely false and fabricated. I have never raised my voice at anyone in the restaurant, including the waiter who had offended me. I only spoke with staff members who approached me and in a professional and polite manner, as is my usual demeanor. I did not request to speak with the manager, assuming that the offending waiter was the manager. Moreover, the waiter never denied what he had said, and even apologized as I was leaving. The fact that the restaurant management responded to my review with false accusations and lies indicates that my negative experience was not an isolated incident, but rather a reflection of the restaurant's policies. Although I anticipate the restaurant may continue to make false accusations after this clarification, I have no intention of engaging in further responses. My aim is solely to caution my fellow travelers and potential customers against having to endure a similarly...
Read moreMy trip to York was full of unexpected discoveries, but none as remarkable as Yemen Heaven. This family-run gem, led by the incredibly inspiring Muna and her five kind children, including the notably charming Zay and Tom, captures true passion and dedication. I felt like being welcomed into a family deeply passionate about sharing their heritage.
The atmosphere in Yemen Heaven is something out of a dream. It's not just about the food; it's about the soul of Yemen that Muna and her children pour into this place. The story behind their effort, elegantly detailed in the menu, adds a layer of depth to the dining experience that's as nourishing as the meals.
Speaking of meals, the Baba Ganoush was an absolute revelation. It had an authenticity and freshness that spoke volumes of the care put into its preparation. The bread, warm and perfectly textured, seemed to carry the very essence of Yemen. Both the lamb Mandi and the chicken were cooked to such perfection, they could easily be the best meat dishes in York.
But Yemen Heaven is more than just its food. It's a celebration of culture, evident in their events that showcase Yemeni music and traditions. It's Muna's philosophy of welcoming every culture that really sets this place apart, creating a truly inclusive atmosphere. The backyard, with its colorful seating and lush plants, offers a tranquil escape, reminiscent of Arabian nights.
If you're in York and seeking not just a meal but an experience that touches your heart, Yemen Heaven is where you need to be. Take the time to chat with Muna or her incredibly kind children if you can; it's the warmth of their welcome that will stay with you long after you've left. From the depths of my heart, I highly recommend Yemen Heaven!
Sending all my love and gratitude from...
Read morePlace looked very nice when we arrived BUT: We sat down around 6.35 waited 15 minutes to get a menu, when we received the menus we were asked what we wanted there and then without even looking at them. We ordered 3 drinks but were not ready for food without looking through the menu.
One person at our party received their drink after 10 minutes. After another 5-10 minutes we asked someone about the other two drinks. We were told they were on the way. After 40 minutes after arriving I received my drink and another five muntes my friend received there's.
Another table opposite us recived their menus, drinks and food before we even received one round of drinks. Even then they received their food with no cutlery.
The music was either off or someone blasting it so loud you couldn't talk in weird intervals of off and on. The only person to apologise was a waitress who was clearly very stressed and was by no means her fault that we waited for so long. Just before receiving our drinks we were only then asked what we would like to order at by which point we had decided to go elsewhere.
I do understand the place was clearly very understaffed. We did not have a booking so it begs the question to why they sat us without a booking since the staff could not handle the pressure with even the tables there already.
I may still go back here I think the food on other tables looked really good and has been on my list for a while but the service was honestly terrible and I hope the staffing shortage is resolved and the current staff recieve a little...
