When I came to York to meet my overseas friend, we had actually passed this place. Since then, I've often wondered what it was like. So, seeing as I was spending the day in York, I decided to take a walk to Gatehouse Coffee and try it out. Although it's not an overly big place, it's very quirky and worth a visit! There's some chairs inside, and then a number of tables and chairs outside, which is great when the weather is nice. The lady who served me was super pleasant, as was the two chaps in there too! Was nice to sit outside and relax for a while with a cappuccino. Would definitely come back here again, and a great stop-off if you're walking the York City Walls!

My family thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon at the Gatehouse. It’s in a charming, historic building with seating options inside and outside (lovely views). My husband and I both had the cheese and ham toasty, which we agree tasted delicious. My husband’s pour over coffee was perfect and I enjoyed my flat white. My daughter had the hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows, and she declared it to be the best cocoa of our trip
even better than the Dorchester! Also, the staff is friendly and kind. Now that we are satiated, we’re off to walk the city wall that the cafe is attached to.

Cool quirky setting for a coffee house, let down by the service. The three American staff working there when I visited...were nice friendly people, but unfortunately incredibly slow and incompetent...I was convinced they were stoned.

It was fairly busy, but the staff moved at a snails pace, forgetting many orders, the lady didn't know how to make a tea and had to ask her coworker. After around 25 minutes of waiting for my order (2 coffees and one slice of cake), I asked if they definitely had it in their queue...they didn't, and had forgotten to print off the receipt for their queue. Coffee was okay, biscoff brownie was extremely dry, price was standard for what you'd expect in a café in that setting.

If you want a touristy gimmicky café, in an admittedly really cool location and quirky setting, then it's worth a visit.

If you want good service and good coffee/cake, I highly recommend...
