St Catherine's Castle is a Henrician castle in Cornwall, built by Thomas Treffry between approximately 1538 and 1540, in response to fears of an invasion of England by France and the Holy Roman Empire. The D-shaped, stone fortification, equipped with five gun-ports for cannon, overlooked the mouth of the River Fowey in Cornwall. It was protected by a curtain wall and the surrounding cliffs. The castle remained in use for many years until it was closed at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. Brought back into service in 1855 during the Crimean War, it was fitted with two new artillery positions, but it soon became obsolete and was abandoned. Read moreIf you're able to do a short but very steep hike, I definitely recommend these Castle Ruins. There are parts of the castle in amazing condition, but really it's The Views that's what's worth the climb! A near 360 degrees vantage point over everything! And on a sunny day, you can see for miles!
These are castle ruins... I saw someone who must be confused and posted their review and pictures to the wrong place! 🤣🤣🤣 This is NOT furnished! They're a skeleton of what once stood here hundreds of years ago from King Henry Viii.
You'll need to park in the public Castle Car Park and walk down to the cove area. It is steep and a bit of a long walk... But you can rest in the cove and grab a coffee at the lovely grab-and-go cafe before heading up to the castle.
And if you're up for a walk, carry on south down the path for more fun surprises! 😂
Not ♿ Accessible. Numerous stairs and bumpy ancient dirt paths to this...
Read moreThis is a small gun tower rather than what I would think of as a castle. But it is well preserved and it is free to just go and have a wander about. There are some information signs but that's all. Don't expect toilets and an ice cream (you can have those down on the beach though! Only a couple of minutes walk away). There are lovely views from there across to Polruan and back to Fowey. For me that made it worth the visit. The costal path it sits on is National Trust maintained. There is a covered bench with information signs, but sadly, due to it being accessible to the public at all times, the interior is heavily graffitied with lots of sexually explicit drawings which may make you think twice about taking your children to look at the signs. The signs at the castle itself were in good condition without having been defaced. The path up to the castle from Readymoney Cove is steep...
