Readymoney Cove is a beautiful little cove at the mouth of the Fowey estuary looked over by St Catherine's castle. The cove is well sheltered from the elements and appears to have it's own quiet little microclimate making it the perfect spot for a swim! Boats are not allowed in the cove, and in summer a floating platform is attached to the buoy in the cove making it the perfect place for a summer splash with young children. What makes this cove so brilliant though is Readymoney Beach Shop. The shop serves a wide variety of teas, coffees and hot chocolates, amazing cakes, hot and cold snacks such as the good old Cornish pasty, and incredible ice creams. Alongside the food and drink, Readymoney Beach shop also stocks cards, souvenirs, trinkets and all kinds of beautiful little knick knacks!
What also helps this shop succeed all expectations is the owner Victoria. Victoria aims to keep her shop as inclusive and sustainable as possible. She stocks supplies from small local Cornish businesses, and where possible, stocks sustainable and ecofriendly options such as plastic free crabbing lines. The most notable adjustment is of course the iconic Readymoney Beach Shop mugs. Drinks from the shop are served in recycled plastic mugs in order to cut the use of sungle-use takeaway cups. You can grab your drink, wander around the beach, enjoy a brew with a view, then just drop the mug back as you leave!
The other element that makes this shop a cut above the rest is the community palpable community spirit amongst Victoria, the staff and the local people of Fowey. During the first lockdown period this year, Victoria set up a community project creating bunting flags to different themes which were collated and displayed following the reopening, though they are spending the winter in a slightly more sheltered location! After the announcement that the Government would no longer provide free school meals over half term, once again the Readymoney Beach Shop team stepped up and provided free meals to those in need.
Even if you can't make it down to Readymoney in person, you can follow updates on their active social media and buy their amazing stock online as well!
Victoria has gone above and beyond for me personally, for the local community, and for the wider community. To see an example of a small business done right, look no further than Readymoney Beach Shop!

Read moreWhat can I say? Id like very much to be able to leave a great review and support this local business, but in the four years of coming here the owner has been rude and unwelcoming every single time, actually refusing to speak to not just me, but also other customers in queue, but having great conversations with her colleague while you are made to stand and wait and that's if she doesn't break off with a look of disgust aimed at whoevers coming through her door. It's a real shame to be made to feel so unwelcome, and after four years of thinking "maybe she's just had a bad day", I'm now sufficiently offended to leave a negative review of the business.
Let me make it clear since seeing the reply of the owner, that never once have I ever seen her do anything other than stand behind the counter either sullenly and silently serving or chatting in a perfectly friendly manner to her colleague before breaking off and looking down her nose at her customers audacity to purchase a coffee. The nerve lol. As for your suggestion that I go out of my way to great you, I have on numerous occasions, it has always been met with a miserable countenance and sullen silence. Hence my finally leaving this review, because I can't stand the idea of someone vulnerable treating themselves to a coffee and trying to have a nice day on the beach but being made to feel even worse by your horrible attitude and rudeness...
Read moreExcellent cafe and beach shop, and very good value bodyboard rental at £2 per day which is a "no brainer" when my 7 year old wanted to have one for the day. My wife says the coffee is really good, and my tea was also much nicer out of a proper cup then a disposable paper one. The two at a time in the shop thing is fine, as it's quite small and only two people can be served at once anyway. What I did find hard to accept was an insistance that customers must be masked. That's absurd when both staff were bare-faced and behind perspex anyway. If it's safe for the staff to be bare faced then surely it's safe for the customers too?? I simply refuse to partake in the charade in these circumstances but I wasn't the only person having this discussion and I felt a bit sorry for the friendly staff being put in this position. Also saw one guy get quite aggressive when he was asked to stand outside - he pointed out that the signage indicated he could browse whilst someone else was served but was quite rude about it. Hopefully next year things will be more normal and you will have confidence to allow people to make their own judgement about masks and avoid the repeated conflict. But in the meantime if you are going to insist customers mask then the staff need to as well.
But, excellent coffee, tea and food and astonishingly good value body board rental. 5 stars once back...
