I recently had the pleasure of visiting Hereford Cathedral, and it was a truly enriching experience. The cathedral, steeped in history, offers a fascinating journey through centuries of heritage and architecture. Here are a few highlights that made my visit memorable:

Historical Richness Hereford Cathedral is a treasure trove of historical facts and artifacts. As you wander through its majestic halls, you can feel the weight of history in every corner. The cathedral houses the famous Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world dating back to the 13th century. This artifact alone is worth the visit, offering a unique glimpse into the medieval worldview.

Architectural Beauty The cathedral's architecture is simply breathtaking. The blend of Norman and Gothic styles creates a stunning visual experience. The intricate stonework and towering spires are a testament to the craftsmanship of the past. The stained glass windows, particularly the large west window, are masterpieces of art that bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Tranquil Atmosphere Despite its grandeur, Hereford Cathedral maintains a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The tranquil cloisters and the beautifully maintained gardens provide a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation. It's a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find a moment of peace.

Informative Displays Throughout the cathedral, there are numerous displays and information boards that provide detailed insights into its history and significance. These informative pieces enhance the visitor experience by offering context and background to the various elements of the cathedral.

Overall, Hereford Cathedral is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a beautiful and serene place to explore. The combination of its historical significance, architectural beauty, and welcoming atmosphere makes it a standout destination.

A history spanning over 1300 years. It has been the seat of a bishopric since at least the 7th century, with the current structure largely dating back to the 12th century Norman or Romanesque period. The cathedral is renowned for its architectural features, including a cruciform plan, a crossing tower, and a nave of eight bays. Absolutely amazing architecture, could have spent the whole day here. The Cathedral itself is FREE to enter. The cathedral houses the Hereford Mappa Mundi, a 13th-century world map, and the Chained Library, one of the largest of its kind, containing manuscripts dating back to the 8th century. This was £7.50 to see the 2, which we thought wasn't too bad. You can also do a tour of the tower, but it would be better to book it, as they seem to sell out fast, we were unable to do this as they sold out for the day, think they only do 3 tours a day and wasn't sure of the price of this, but would have done it. All of it was amazing, and would definitely recommend it if you're in the area and interested in this sort of thing. We were able to take are DOG into the cathedral, (they have only just started letting dogs in, and she was in her pushchair) but she wasn't allowed in the other sections, so we just took it in turns, as there was plenty to see....

Really enjoyed our visit to this fabulous cathedral. We went mainly to see the Mappa Mundi, they world's largest intact medieval map of the world (as they understood it then). The excellent guide explained it in full, but in addition recounted the tale of how it was saved from being sold in the 1980 s. All fascinating, but there was more - we then told about the cathedral's own copy of the 1217 Magna Carta. Really interesting additional information and insight into a period that can seem very remote. We then went on to see part of the chained library and how these priceless books are preserved for posterity. We had an excellent light lunch in the cafe, and then strolled round the cathedral. This is a must visit location for anyone interested in British history. A truly valuable experience, enlivened by very knowledgeable and personable guides and staff. Highly recommended.
